Surgery for an abandoned dog.

I found this poor girl running around West Philly terrified and alone.  She has tissue bulging out of her vaginal area (either her uterus or vaginal tissue) and has some bleeding and weeping occurring.  No owner in sight, no one on the street had ever seen her, so I took her to Penn Vet after being told PAWS would not take her.  Penn Vet would not examine and was going to send her straight to Animal Care and Control where I knew this little pit bull would not have a hope.  With help from friends and aquaintances, I was able to secure an appointment for 5:30 today for her at Philadelphia Animal Hospital where they will likely perform surgery tomorrow,  I've been told to expect it to cost $800 plus follow ups, so I set this at $1000.  Help if you can, and if you or someone you know can provide foster help, or even better, a forever home, let me know!   She is very small brindle coat with a tiny white stripe on her nose. Around 25 pounds,  is easy to handle and carry, is very obedient and seems to love other dogs (lots of tail wagging) and is not startled by or interested in my cats.

Hi folks! This is a long overdue update on Mabel, but the news is good! She has fully recovered and is ready to be considered for adoption! These pics are a little wonky. Mabel is good with people, good with dogs, but hasn't had much in the way of exposure to kids or cats (though she definitely likes to chase things that run!) so let me know if you are interested, and thanks again to all of you for helping this dog get a second chance!

Hello, folks! Just a quick update to let you know that Mabel (yes she has a name now!) is doing really well and recovering slowly but surely from her recent surgery and her prolapsed vaginal tissue. Some of the swelling has already receded and Sara is very familiar with this condition and has a great treatment and cleaning protocol in place to keep the area clean, moist and protected from infection. I spent about 2 hours with Mabel, Sara and Alex and she was very relaxed, happy and just an overall great dog. It will likely be weeks or even months before she is fully recovered and ready for her forever home, but if you are patient and can wait, she is a wonderful companion, a well trained dog who likes dogs and cats and people and has never shown the least bit of aggression or displeasure with any of us or the other animals in our households. We'll know more with time and experience! Happy holidays, everyone, you have certainly made mine shine bright!

Apparently hauling Xmas trees at Greensgrow made me stronger than I realized: she weighed in at 38 pounds and it is definitely a distended uterus. She's staying overnight at the vet and will have surgery tomorrow afternoon, including a spay, and will be returned to me with all her shots updated, The folks at Philadelphia Animal Hospital were great: they took my $400 knowing I'm not sure how or when the rest of it is getting paid. A lucky break for all involved.
