A Shark Attack SURVIVOR: Colin Cook

$76,204 of $100,000 goal

Raised by 1,014 people in 46 months
Brendan Prior
on behalf of Colin Cook Recovery Trust of 2015
 TIVERTON, RI
Our best friend Colin Cook originally grew up surfing in Rhode Island.  He was ready to make his name building surfboards in Hawaii.  He's been living and surfing on the North Shore of Oahu for the past three years, which has been his life dream.

On October 9th he was surfing at a local break and was pulled under by a shark.  He fought off the shark and was pulled to shore by other surfers.  Thankfully he made it out alive, but he lost his left leg from above the knee and is also suffering hand injuries.

Colin Cook is the toughest person we know but the financial strain of this hardship promises to be great.  Our goal is for your donations to aid in his recovery and a  badass prosthetic limb to ensure he gets back in the water soon!

Some technical information regarding this fundraiser:
Hi my name is Brendan Prior From Tiverton, RI (Colin's hometown). I am representing the gofundme account on his friend and family's behalf.  There are alot of people Colin has positively influenced over the years and we would like to show our support for him.  I am one of Colin's close friends and am in direct communication with his family as they deal with this hardship. I will have Colin draw the funds directly from the gofundme page to assist in his medical expenses. This will include but is not limited to surgery expenses, rehabilitation therapy as well as assisting with the purchase of a prosthetic leg. Please do not hesitate to contact me at this page with any questions or concerns you may have.

Happy New Year,

Thanks to everyone - my new leg has been ordered and I am being fitted as we speak. While I have a ways to go before I can walk on my own, I couldn't have come this far without everyone of your donations.

While I can’t change what happened, nor will I ever know why this happened to me. What I do know is that the love and support of the community continues to enrich me. I know I won’t be able to do things the same way I used to, but nothing can stop me from doing the things I love.

Thank you for all of your support, Love Colin

Colin's family and friends are deeply grateful for the astounding outpouring of support provided by the hundreds of caring donors to this GoFundMe campaign. Thanks to the amazing generosity of each and every donor, we have reached our goal of $50,000 in just five days. You all have our eternal gratitude.

This will be a big help to Colin as he sets out on the road back to his daily routine and pursuing his passion. The courage, strength, and determination he has shown at the very outset of this long battle are truly inspiring. But his fight has only just begun.

Yesterday Colin entered rehab where he will remain for a few weeks, then will return home to continue working toward full recuperation. His goal is to surf again. This will necessitate tons of hard work, medical treatment, and a specialized prosthesis. The costs of an advanced prosthetic leg alone can top $50,000, and every 3-5 years the prosthesis will need to be replaced due to wear. The lifetime cost of medical care and prosthetics for a single lost leg is over $1.4 million.

With this in mind, we are extending the opportunity to donate beyond our initial goal. The money raised will help to assuage his worries about the astronomical medical costs he is incurring. More importantly, the continued outpouring of support from around the world will encourage and comfort Colin as he embarks on the long journey back.

Please spread the word, and help us to show Colin that he remains in all of our hearts and prayers.

With regards to my previous comment, Collin I am not trying to sound insensitive to what you have endured. My heart sincerely goes out to you & I will pray for you. My only concern is that I feel bad for the Island locals that are originally born & raised in Hawaii; have been bitten by sharks all of the time. However, they never get this amount of attention as people that are from the mainland do. That is all that I am saying. God bless you and good luck with your recovery.

I am very sorry hear what has happened to you. I will pray for your recovery, & hope that your emotional healing process will recover in a productive manner. However, I find it very sad that a person from out of state gets so much attention, and help. Yet, when my local natives from Hawaii get bit or attacked by sharks, they never get attention or this mych help. Just saying what I feel. Good luck with your recovery.
