Surf Beyond Sight

My name is Joshua Loya, and I am a blind surfer. I have a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete in Hawaii this August at the Access Surf Duke’s Oceanfest Hawaii Adaptive Surfing Championships. My first surf contest was the 2017 US Open of Adaptive Surfing, at which I took 3rd in my division. At the time, I had very limited surfing experience, but I did extremely well, in spite of this. I give credit to my over a decade of martial arts experience and excellent surf instruction and coaching by Pat Weber of the San Diego Surfing Academy. Following my success at the US Open, I entered the sight impaired division of the annual contest put on by Access Surf Hawaii, as part of Duke’s Oceanfest. I am asking for your help in getting me, my coach, and my wife to the contest. I am also asking for your help in covering our expenses while we are there.

This will be  my first time in Hawaii. In fact, it will be my first time off the mainland continent of North America. I never thought for a million years that I’d ever be a competitive surfer. I found surfing quite by accident, and it is one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me. The calm that comes over me while I am riding a wave to shore is something that is better experienced than described with words. It is my hope by competing, that I can encourage other blind and visually impaired people to give surfing a try. Please partner with me in making this dream a reality.

I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who has donated and shared the compaign. Momentum is building! I’m so excited. As I have said before, Surf Beyond Sight is so much bigger than me. It’s bigger than surfing or athletics for blind and visually impaired people. It’s about calming the storm inside, so you can ride the waves of opportunity that life presents you. I’m going first with these competitions because I believe this is the best first step.

Right now, I am preparing to visit the WSL Founder’s Cup. I’m a surfing fan, as well as a competitor. This weekend is a turning point in surfing history. Together, we can make history by removing artificial barriers to the quality of life each person can have. Please partner with me in building something that can make a meaningful difference for way more people than just me.

We’ve started getting donations! Thank you so very much! The first goal is to cover our tickets to Hawaii in August. The sooner we buy those, the sooner we can more accurately budget for the rest of the trip. Remember, Duke’s is the priority, but it is only the first step. I have several contests this year, and Surf Beyond Sight can be much bigger than just me. We can help other blind and visually impaired people live lives of adventure, whether through surfing, martial arts, or anything else. We start with surfing because it is the turn the adventure has taken. Let’s ride this from here, and see what we can build. Every little bit helps. Also, please give with a clear conscience, and if you decide not to donate, please share the link. The groundswell on this could build with a single donation.
