GSOC Distress Fund for Trish Flores

This is a fundraising campaign by GSOC-UAW 2110, the union of graduate student workers at NYU, to create a distress fund to support our colleague, Trish Flores. We welcome donations from our members, other units, locals, comrades, friends, and supporters!

Trish is an MA student in Media, Culture, and Communication in NYU's Steinhardt School, and is a member of our union. She is studying the intersection of disability studies, technology studies, and organizational communication, and had been working as a Research Assistant on disability studies projects. Her scholarly work derives from her own experiences with disability and an ethical concern to consider the ways in which differently-abled people can communicate in the workplace. Those of us who know Trish enjoy her as a warm, smart, energetic, and strong soul.

Trish is a 9/11 survivor and as a result of the attack now suffers from severe vertigo, PTSD, and is gradually sliding into deafness. Her health has been especially challenging and costly this year, and, as a graduate student worker, she does not have any savings.

She recently was in the NYU hospital for 20 days, and was just released last week. While she was in the hospital she lost her housing. After her discharge she was sleeping in Bobst Library, and is now living in a homeless shelter. She is hungry and tired from the noisy nights and sparse meals at the shelter, and a little worried for her safety.

We are raising funds to get Trish out of the shelter ASAP, and to help with rent, utilities, food, and a metrocard.

It is standard practice for unions to raise distress funds for members in need. Our union's constitution reads: "It shall be the duty of each member to render aid and assistance to brother or sister members in cases of illness, death or distress."

Now is the moment to render aid! Please give as much as you can -- however big or small. We need these funds quickly so that Trish can move into a more stable home, take care of her health, and focus on work and school.

Please join us in supporting this awesome person, and in practicing true solidarity.
