Support the Family of Kevin Flores

$27,671 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 594 people in 15 months
Created January 28, 2018
On the evening of January 26th, 13 year old Kevin Flores was riding his bike not far from his school when he was hit and killed by an unlicensed truck driver.

Kevin was a remarkable young man with a shy smile and a subtle sense of humor who never failed to make his friends, teachers, and loved ones laugh. Everyone who met Kevin was charmed by his warmth and easy going nature, and he will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.

Kevin was in the process of realizing his dream of launching his own clothing brand - designing artwork for t-shirts and buttons. Kevin was a natural and talented artist, and was already working on his portfolio for his future application to selective arts high schools. This was the next step towards his goal of becoming an architect.

The goal of this campaign is to raise money to support Kevin's family with funeral and personal expenses in this time of mourning. Additionally, Kevin's mother is five months pregnant. Our goal is that no financial needs should burden Kevin's family as they cope with this tragic loss and prepare for the arrival of a new child.

This campaign is being overseen by the leadership of Kevin's school - Launch EL Charter School - and all funds will be given directly to Kevin's family.

We hope to reach our goal in the next week (by February 3rd) to immediately be able to provide this support to the family as they manage funeral and related expenses.

The Launch Community and The Flores family thank everyone deeply for all of their love and support. Thanks to your generosity and kindness that family has been able to cover the costs of Kevin's funeral and burial.

Tragically, two more children were killed on the streets of Brooklyn this week, ages 1 and 4. The children and families of Brooklyn and New York City deserve safe streets.

Please join us at the March for Safe Streets this Monday.

Thanks to your remarkable outpouring of love and support, we have hit our initial goal of raising $10,000 to support Kevin's family! We and the family are deeply humbled and appreciative of everyone who has donated and shared this campaign.

We want to do as much as we can to support Kevin's mother, both as she copes with the loss of her incredible son and as she prepares for the birth of a new child in just four months - so we're setting a new goal of $20,000!

As we've mentioned, Kevin had clear goals for himself and was working to achieve them. Inspired by his love for the clothing brand Supreme, Kevin was working on his own fashion designs, one of which you can see in this post. The quote he included truly captures Kevin's positive spirit.

You can also see an activity in which Kevin began outlining his goals and thoughts about achieving them. Again, his optimism and positivity shines through. "It's always good to push yourself, for you can succeed and get to any place you want to go... Just do your work, think positive, and do what you have to do."

There's no doubt in our minds that Kevin would have continued to grow as an incredible artist and designer if he had been given that opportunity. There's also no doubt that he would have continued to support, motivate, and inspire those around him with his focus and commitment to his goals. His absence has left a hole in our hearts, but his memory will always warm and inspire.

Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to this campaign. We spent the day today with Kevin's classmates who are struggling with this loss and asking how they can help. They were incredibly moved and appreciative of the outpouring of support for Kevin's family. They wanted you to know what a warm and positive person Kevin was, and how driven he was to achieve his goals.

This was the last drawing that Kevin did shortly before leaving school on Friday. He loved his bicycle. He learned bike repair in our school's Recycle-A-Bicycle program, and borrowed tools from the program to give his bike a tune up. He used his bike to shorten his commute from Ridgewood and was proud that he was no longer arriving late to school.

Every bit of support is incredibly helpful, as Kevin's mother is also five months pregnant. Her strength through this has been remarkable, and we want to ensure she has everything she needs and more as she leads her family through this loss, and the arrival of a new family member. Thank you all again for your donations, and please continue to spread the word!
