Matthew Salesses is a cherished writer, teacher, and  friend in the Asian American and larger literary community. Earlier this year, Matt Salesses's wife  Cathreen was unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer, and for the past year, has been battling cancer through long term hospitalization. Friends from the Asian American writing community are organizing to fundraise for Matthew and his family during their current stay in Korea, as he cares for his wife, young daughter, and newborn son. For this special campaign, writers, poets, and editors have generously donated their signed books, and created special items to support Matt and his family. The funds will go to  his family medical expenses, and is a loving gesture of our solidarity and care during this time. Your vital contribution will support Matt's family and at the same time you will receive inspired books and gifts by formative Asian American writers creating today and into the future.  Consider these special gifts for your beloved as a special holiday gift, or New Year's  for a literary loving friend (or yourself!) The fundraiser will continue until we sell out, or through the second week of Jan (Jan 12th). All prizes will be sent to the donors before the end of January. Many thanks again to the Asian American writing community for their generousity of time, contributions, and collective support. We hope you can join us in supporting Matt and his family during this time.

Update: Thoughts on Love from the Cancer Ward

I have been thinking a lot about our human need to love and be loved, and the need for others in the process of making a “self.” We have different selves for different ways of loving, and all of those selves are indeed separate and also linked. I guess what I’ve been thinking about is community and how the community we have also makes the community of selves with which we fight to live a whole life. You all are my community and I have tried to become the kind of writer and person worthy of your love. And then there is this other community I am suddenly adjacent to, of people surviving cancer, of people entirely aware of life. I have felt inadequate to this community, and to my wife, but I think that the love from you all makes me able to meet the great possibilities of life that those closest to death are always dressed in. My wife and I go to Seoul three weeks out of every four and chemicals that slowly kill her pump through her body to slow down the fast death of her body turning against itself. The part of this chemo covered by her insurance, the tried and true, costs a couple of hundred bucks. The part of her chemo that risks more, that gives us hope in the experiment of human reaching, costs a couple of thousand bucks because the government has not yet confirmed that this medicine indeed brings life. Every week my wife survives in a community of hope, and every week you all make that possible and make it possible for me to join her. My deepest thanks and love. I see you and I apologize for not being able to offer more words, more personal words, more frequent communication, but know that you all are constantly in my thoughts and are the greatest inspiration besides my wife who wants so badly to live that she is willing to kill her body which is killing her. Xoxo. Your friend and admirer.

Dear all,

Thank you again for your incredibly generous support. With your vital donations, it made so much possible and truly shows generosity of community. With your help, we raised well over our initial goal of $3,500, with the full amount of $4,928. With 87 donors, and all of our authors who donated as well, it is a testament to folks coming together, and addressing issues of health care and supporting Asian American writers. These funds are critical to help support Matt's family, and his partner Cathreen's treatments during this time.

The authors who donated their books also generously gave, and we are excited to send the prizes within the next week. To kindly check in, we got delayed because GoFundMe could not provide the full information initially, but all has been confirmed.

Everyone who donated for a book prize should have received an email confirmation already. Those who donated for AALR issues, or poetry fortune cookies will receive an email by next week due to the GoFundMe delay.

If there are any questions, please feel free to message directly.

The generous support, and caring has been so moving to witness. Below is a short note of love and thanks from Matt for everyone. Thank you again.

best,

Margaret

Thank you so much everyone for your incredibly generous donations and support for Matthew and his family. I am so happy to share, we have reached above our initial goal of $3,500. For now, we will continue to accept new donations, and added a few new gifts, but we have reached over our initial goal thanks to all of your generous contributions. These funds greatly help Matt and his family during this challenging and crucial time.

The contributions you made were gestures of care and solidarity for Matt's family, and our literary communities. It has been so buoying to see poets and writers and our allies to the Asian American literary community come together in this way, and for this light.

Matt is currently in Korea, and taking care of his two young children, while his partner Cathreen is undergoing treatments. He will be in touch shortly with an update for us, and sends his gratitude and love as well.

It has all been so meaningful for all this supportive news, and the success of the fundraising which would not have been possible without all your solidarity for Matthew and our communities. Thank you again everyone for contributing to this care, generosity, and making this collective support possible.
