Support Immigrant Neighbors!

We live in a difficult time in history. At the southern border, children are taken from their mothers, with the fear of not being reunited. The Independent reports that some parents are told their children are being taken to be bathed, when in reality they are taken to other facilities, often in another State. The trauma these children experience can cause permanent psychological damage.

We must voice our indignation and act in favor of what is just! The Dayton Rapid Response Team seeks to provide support to our friends and neighbors being accosted by ICE. One immediate action is to provide monetary relief to Advocacy for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE), which provides legal representation to many immigrant workers like those who were victims of the raid in Sandusky, Ohio. ABLE needs our support. If you are outraged by what this administration is doing to undocumented immigrant families and if you have wondered what you can do to contest this immoral act, donating to ABLE is one way you can help.

We don’t even need to draw parallels to tyrannical regimes of the past. We, as a people, cannot stand by and let this continue. We need to come to the aid of those persecuted by this administration. In a future not far from now, scholars will seal the events of our time into the books of history. Do we want to be remembered for this inhumane, disgusting, mistreatment of people? Do we really want our names to be associated with this shame? There are many who would rather sit idly as our friends and neighbors are taken. There are many who would rather not run against the tide and stay silent. They claim to be Moderates, "willing to listen to both sides", and apathetic to the injustice that occurs while this administration endeavors to “make America great again.” Indeed, there are some who claim there are two sides to this issue as if human rights is something to debate.

And there are some who say that an agenda of never arguing, never being controversial, and not standing up for what is right is preferable to the consequences of dissent; but the discomfort of disagreement is infinitely preferable to the consequences of silence. Looking beyond the stain which will forever serve as a reminder of the immoral endeavors of this administration, we see one reason above all others to help this cause: it is the right thing to do. This is not the first time tyranny has surfaced, as despotism is older than democracy. Let us remember our nation's history, which is by no measure perfect. Let us think of what our own place in history will be. The urgency of this hour cannot be overstated. We support the service members of this nation, and we do not seek lawlessness or the overthrow of any institution. We do, however, seek for our nation to exercise those values we so cherish: justice, honesty, and wisdom. We not only ask for your support, but for your commitment to the just course of human history, to the betterment of our nation, and to your fellow citizens of the world.
