Gunnar's Wheels

$139,835 of $150,000 goal

Raised by 3,156 people in 31 months
My dog, Gunnar was hit by a truck on Feb 16, 2014, which left him a paraplegic. We incurred many vet bills during his recovery. He now requires a wheelchair cart to get around, which helped him regain his mobility and live life to the fullest. We received a ton of help during his recovery... and decided to give back.

We started a foundation called Gunnar's Wheels. Our goal was to have a fleet of loaner carts for shelter dogs and animals whose owners cannot afford them. As of April 2017, we now have 501c3 non-profit status with the IRS!

The rules of Gunnar's Wheels are as follows:

1) The animal gets to use the cart free of charge until the cart is no longer needed, or the animal passes away.

2) At that time, the cart will be sent back to Gunnar's Wheels for a quick once over and sent out to the next needy animal.

That's it!

This is Hope, the first recipient of Gunnar's Wheels. She came into BARC in Houston, TX. Social media alerted us to her and we provided a cart for her. After Hope, we were able to increase our fleet to 3 carts, with the goal of hitting 50. We were overwhelmed with requests for carts, and are getting to fulfill our dream of helping these otherwise unadoptable animals see their dream of finding a forever family and enjoying life to the fullest!! Hope has actually made a full recovery and can now run, fetch, and hop. Check it out:  https://www.facebook.com/kimberlee.sofka/videos/10154996331205977/

From the summer of 2016 until now, we have sent out 114 carts. We have helped 130 animals, as some carts are on their 2nd animal.

Just to give you an idea of our expenses: The carts cost between $125.00 and upwards of $700.00 for specialty carts. Specialty carts are 4-wheeled carts, front-wheeled carts, and amputee carts. The cost to repair a cart varies. If the cart just needs a harness, it could be $25.00. If the cart needs a side frame, it could be right around $50.00. The wheels vary in cost from $10.00 to $45.00 depending on the size and composition. We also turn over about 20 chairs annually due to recover or death, which does help keep expenses down.

Our goal for this year (2017), and every year afterwards: We want to help every animal that is in need of a cart.

We tend to spend about $10K per year, so raising $50,000 to $60,000 would keep us covered for the next couple of years. We've set the goal at $30,000 for now, but hope to go far beyond that. We'll continue to raise the goal as long as donations are coming in so we can plan for the future.

Thank you in advance for considering your donation to Gunnar's Wheels!! Any contribution helps us work toward our goal of seeing all these animals mobile and happy.

We are also currently nominated for the National Hero Dog Award. Check it out here, and send us a vote any day you can up until May 3, 2017:  http://herodogawards.org/dog/gunnar/

This is a little late, but, Gunnars wheels sent out our 1000th cart!!! Kona lives in Montana with his owner, who is currently working her way through college. I wanted to take time to thank each and every one of our donors that made this possible. We sent out the ski attachments as well, so Kona can enjoy the Montana winter. During this journey called Gunnar's wheels. I have spoken to some pretty amazing owners and rescues. People that care about an animal so much, they put aside personal pride, and ask for help for their best friend. The rescues are looking at these animals now, knowing that we can help them with the major expense of wheels. I am proud of our foundation, but most of all, I am proud of you, our generous donors, for getting us to where we are today, and believing in us. Gunnar's memory lives on in each and every one of you!!! THANK YOU!!!! Jason Parker, Founder, Gunnar's wheels Foundation

Thanks to your donations, we were able to save Gunnar, A pup I named after my own Gunnar. We were contacted by a gentleman in Texas that came across him while on his sanitation route. He messaged us asking for help with finding a rescue for this boy, as the owners did not want him anymore. We shared his post, and God's Dogs rescue in San Antonio stepped up, found him a foster and the rest...you will see from his youtube video that we had done. Enjoy...Gunnar Thank You!!! Jason

I received a few messages looking for updates on animals post-cart. Clarice, the fawn, received her wheels this week and is finally able to be up and exploring the world. She will be at FURWINllc wildlife rehab as she recovers, with the hope that she may someday be released into the wild once again. We now have dogs, cats, rabbits, an opossum, a sheep, and a goat in the carts. The second picture is Clarice making new friends with a opossum baby. Thank you for your support!!!

I have a new wheel chair that my dog refused to use. Montana was not paralyzed but had neurological issues and would rather walk on his own. I am more than willing to donate this cart. The cart is for a large dog (Montana weighed 130). Please let me know if interested and how to make this happen.

Thanks so much to all who have donated so that Jason can continue to provide this phenomenal service for those of us with disabled dogs so that they may continue to live as normal a life without the use of a limb(s). Without your graciousness, my Star would never have been able to get her chair. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

What a great thing to do. I would like to donate however believe it or not I currently have a basset hound with a back issue we are trying to fix. It kills me to see her like this (she is unable to use her back legs) we are trying a chiropractor and acupuncture hoping to get her better. If and when she is done and I have extra money I will give something. Keep up the great work, my daughter said we need one of these (she didn't know the cost) but they are definitely not in my budget right now. Good luck with this!!!

This is an awesome thing you are doing. We had a dog several years ago that lost the ability to use his back legs and we could have used something like this for him. We miss our Duke so very much. We have a lab/beagle mix that is 16 years old right now and her back legs are becoming very weak, but she is still wanting to be here with us. Keep up the great work you are doing for so many fur children.

This is so awesome , unfortunately I have to come asking for help instead of giving Our 7 1/2 week puppy Camere (pronounced Come ere) lost control of his hind legs two days ago, we took him to the vet and was told it's a neurologic problem. Due to our current situation of me having a disability myself and raising my soon to be hubby children who are undergoing counsrling for abuse we are unable to afford mri And more costly get care, we live on my ssi, due to having to have a full time caretaker we just can't afford getting the wheelchair for our pup, He dosent understand why his legs don't work and tried so hard to play like he was 3 days ago. It's heartbreaking and I refuse to put him down because I know he can beat this. And my dogs are not dogs there family. Can you please find it in your heart's to help us help him? Thanks so much Laura Lee ,Piedmont Alabama

As I was reading the article, the part where Gunnar took off the instant he got his wheels really touched me. It wasn't that he didn't want to move around, but that he couldn't. Yet when he got the opportunity, he was off again, doing what dogs do: moving, accompanying Jason on walks, being a dog. It was very moving. That Jason is doing the same for other dogs and their owners is just wonderful, and I hope to do my small part in helping him (and his kids) continue the good work.

I have 4 fur babies of my own. One recently went missing for 3 days in the aftermath of hurricane michael. If it wasn't for social media we would not have gotten him back and thankfully he was not hurt in any way. But as a nurse I can't not help especially for babies they help me keep my sanity.
