Alameda Support Foundation is pleased to announce its 2015 scholarship award winners.
ASF selected these scholarship winners based not only on their excellent academic achievements but also for their strong leadership skills and community involvement. During their high school careers these students volunteered at numerous Alameda charities and community organizations.
Alyssa Manzo (upper left), from Encinal High School, is attending CSU Monterey Bay. Alyssa was a member of the Ballet Folklorico de Carlos Moreno dance company, worked at Harbor House Ministries as a youth counselor for at-risk youth and worked as a camp counselor for Alameda Park and Recreation.
Cole Schneider (upper right), from Alameda High School, will be attending University of Oregon. Cole was a member of the Alameda Rugby Team, volunteered at the Alameda Food Bank and worked as a teacher's assistant as well as a counselor-in-training at the Harbor Bay Club.
Linnea Arneson (lower left), a graduate of Encinal High School is attending UC Berkeley. Linnea was a volunteer for the Freedom Readers Book Club and instructor at Girls Who Code. She founded and was president of the Shakespeare Club, coaching acting and 17th century English.
Payam Katoozian (lower right), a graduate of Alameda Science and Technology Institute, will be attending UC Santa Cruz. Payam worked with Pegasus Voyages, teaching low-income youth about sailing. He also was the Lead Electrical System Designer with FIRST Robotics, an organization that inspires young people to be leaders in science and technology.
State tax payers contributions to UC and CSU institutions continue to decrease and universities have reacted by raising tuitions and accompanying fees. Additionally, the cost of room and board for students is increasing, as well as costs for books and related educational and living expenses. This makes it very difficult for students to graduate without being saddled with huge loans to repay.
To address this increase in the cost of college, ASF is seeking funds for these students through crowdfunding.
