Christian Blevins' Cancer Battle

$5,655 of $25,000 goal

A couple of weeks ago US Army Officer Christian (Tian) Blevins was diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma, stage IV cancer in his spine and bones. They discovered his spine is covered in lesions and is crumbling, in addition his vertebrae are pinching the spinal nerves causing excruciating pain. As they were preparing for radiation treatment and researching clinical trials at Duke, they were hit with the news that there was a massive tumor in Tian's neck pushing against his spinal cord and surgery had to be done immediately. On September 8th, he went in to have the area around the tumor decompressed and stabilized. They received exciting news as the surgery went great and there was zero loss of movement, and after spending that night in ICU Tian was sent home September 9th. He no longer has the debilitating pain in his shoulder and neck from the compressed spinal cord and is scheduled to meet with the radiation, spinal, and melanoma oncologists at Duke to determine a program for the cancer.

The first hurdle has been cleared but there are going to be more to get Tian 100% well.

The prayers, love and support have been graciously received by the Blevins' family but this is only the beginning of a long road to recovery for Tian.  In a state of complete exhaustion that I can't even begin to comprehend, they've asked for nothing but prayers and help with meals but I think together we can support them with a little bit more :) Tian and Katrina have 5 beautiful girls and 3 of their sweet kiddos are currently living with them.  They are also expecting another sweet little bundle of joy in January... so to ease the financial strain of exploring treatment options, travel expenses, childcare expenses and everything else on their plate; I'm hoping to encourage their friends and family to pull together and make this extremely difficult time a little less stressful. The Blevins family encompasses compassion and selflessness and they bring joy and happiness to everyone they meet, its time to rally behind Tian and Katrina and support them the same way they would for any of us.

11/29- Christian was taken by ambulance to the hospital earlier this morning (Thursday). He has another fluid pocket in his neck and multiple blood clots on both sides of his lungs. He has low blood pressure, a fever and CDiff again. He’s very weak and not doing well. The doctors have admitted him to the Neuro ICU in hopes that they can get some of his vitals under control and transfer him to Duke in the next day or two. Please continue all your prayers and well wishes. He’s a strong man and his will is there, he just needs his body to cooperate.

11/26-
Spent the day up at Duke doing scans and meeting with doctors and got mostly good news. He is doing better and the chemo meds have stopped the tumors from growing!!!. It still isn’t safe to do radiation but that is the plan in the future. They found a blood clot in his lungs but are allowing us to administer injection blood thinners at home. For now he will remain on the Chemo Meds, and IV antibiotics while he rests and recovers at home. Physical Therapy has been delayed until he recovers from the most recent surgery and provided there are no more set backs we will reassess in a month.

UPDATE 11/8
Tian was admitted back to the hospital yesterday and will be headed to surgery this afternoon. He has a really large abscess where the 1st surgery in his neck was done 8 weeks ago. Most likely this is a result of his compromised immune system from being on Chemo. The abscess is deep and down in the muscle. (4x5 inches) The surgeon who did the original surgery will do surgery this afternoon. For now they have him on IV fluids and resting, once they do surgery they will determine which antibiotics to use that are safest with the chemo and will have the best results. We are optimistic that this will only take the one surgery to resolve the issue but have been told there is a possibility it could take up to three. Thank you all for your continued support and prayers, I will do my best to try and keep everyone updated.

Update 10/9/18 : It’s crazy to think that just a couple months ago we were at Universal Studios on vacation with the girls having a blast and today we’re just praying each day that we make it through the day. Its absolutely heart breaking to watch Tian suffer every day, the pain isn’t any better, in-fact often times it’s worse. He has good days and bad days but keep a great attitude throughout them all. He’s diligently working with his walker and walking so that he isn’t relying on a wheelchair but sometimes even being able to go to the bathroom on his own with the walker is too much. Unfortunately even the small things like a 30 minute visit from a friend or a phone call that wakes him up from the little bit of sleep he gets, knocks him back a couple notches and wipes him out completely. (For those we have turned your visits away, please know we do want you to come visit, just a different day when he’s having a better day)
More recently he’s been experiencing some droopiness and numbness in his face, pain in his ear, trouble expressing his thoughts and issues with his speech. The doctors believe this is due to the tumors in the base of his brain pinching some of the nerves. After meeting with the doctors yesterday they have set everything up to start radiation on the 18th. He will only have a few appointment before then and is to just rest otherwise. Radiation will start the 18th and go through the 31st. Hopefully this will help to remedy the numbness and cognitive issues he’s been having and will also help to relieve some of the pain. Once radiation is complete the doctors will re-evaluate everything and decide the next best course of treatment is.
I would like to thank all of you for the help we have received, wether it be taking care of our yard, helping out with the tress after the storm, helping with the kids, groceries, meals , financially or even just prayers. Although i haven’t had a chance to mail thank you cards or thank you all personally, it’s is all truly appreciated. Since is diagnosis we have driven over 2500 miles back and forth to Duke and it’s definitely taken a toll on everyone in the family.
As I mentioned Tian has a great attitude which is half the battle! If anyone can beat the odds, it will be him.
