Support Thom at Kuyper College

Update:
Het is bijna kerst en dat betekent dat het eerste semester er alweer op zit. Ik kijk vol dankbaarheid terug op de eerste helft van mijn tijd hier in Grand Rapids. Ik ben God dankbaar voor alles wat hij mij gegeven heeft: goede cijfers, veel nieuwe vrienden en vooral een diepere kennis van God en zijn genade. De examens waren hard werken, maar tegelijkertijd vlogen ze zo voorbij omdat de stof zo boeiend was. Vooral de Bijbelvakken en theologie vond ik erg interessant. Gelukkig kan ik met beide in januari weer verder. Behalve op academisch vlak ben ik op andere vlakken ook gegroeid. Ik sta inmiddels bekend als een betrouwbare collega op het werk en ik heb mij aangesloten bij een kerk in de binnenstad. Samen met de dominee zijn wij aan het kijken wat voor rol ik binnen die gemeenschap kan spelen.
Het is soms moeilijk te geloven hoe snel de tijd voorbij vliegt. Het feest van dankbaarheid, "Thanksgiving," is voorbij en de eerste kerstvieringen zijn al geweest. Veel vrienden zijn op bezoek bij familie. Zelf kan ik mijn gezin niet zien, maar ik sta stil bij de bijzondere band die ik heb met zoveel mensen. Hier in Amerika, maar ook met u! Ik wil u van harte bedanken voor alle steun die ik heb mogen ontvangen. Zonder u kan ik hier niet zijn. Zou u dit kerstseizoen een gift willen overwegen, zodat ik dit leertraject goed af kan maken?
Een gezegend nieuw jaar toegewenst.

Christmas is just around the corner, and that means the first semester is over! I am so thankful for the time I've had here in Grand Rapids. I praise God for all he's given me: good grades and a lot of new friends, but most of all for a deeper understanding of who he is and of his grace. The finals were hard work, but it was worth it. The classes I took last semester were fascinating! My favorites were the Bible classes and Doctrine, both of which I get to continue next semester. I have also grown in my job, as well as in my new church. Together with my pastor I'm looking for a way to serve that community too.
It's hard to believe how time has flown. Thanksgiving is behind us, we're starting to see the first Christmas celebrations. Many of my friends have gone to be with family. I can't see them this year, but I like to remind myself of all the good bonds I have with so many people. That includes you too! I cannot thank you enough for all your support this semester. I couldn't be here without you. This Giving Season, would you consider giving so I can continue to grow in faith and understanding?

Update: 

We zijn nu ongeveer een maand bezig, en ik wil iedereen van harte bedanken voor iedereen die de afgelopen tijd aan mij heeft gedacht, voor mij heeft gebeden en mij heeft gesteund. De lessen gaan goed. Er is veel huiswerk, maar dat wordt afgewisseld met activiteiten die de school een hechtere gemeenschap maken. Ik heb het gevoel al zoveel geleerd te hebben. Het mooiste aan de lessen vind ik dat alles om God draait, en om zijn plan voor verzoening met ons. Elke dag leer ik iets nieuws over het evangelie.
Ik heb een stel hele goede vrienden gemaakt, die me helpen groeien in wie ik ben. Het leven is gezond druk, behalve alle lessen werk ik ook hard in de keuken om mijn opleiding te betalen. Ik maak ontbijt en avondeten voor heel de school, wat vooral 's ochtends soms best zwaar kan voelen. Toch, ik doe het van harte, en ik ben God zo ontzettend dankbaar dat Hij mij hier naartoe heeft gebracht en voor alle mensen die Hij op mijn pad heeft gestuurd. Dus ook voor u en voor jou.

Now that college has been going on for about a month, I'd like to thank you so much for thinking of me and supporting me during my time here. I can't thank you enough for being involved by prayer and in many other ways. Things are going well for me here. I have settled into classes now (lots of homework!), and I have learned so much already. I love how every class in this school revolves around God's plan of salvation, I hear new things about the gospel every day. The community is awesome, I have so many new friends already. I've noticed they're helping me grow. Life is busy, beside attending classes and doing lots of homework, I work five days a week as my own effort towards college, serving breakfast and dinner to everyone on campus. It's a little bit tough early in the morning  , but it is a good job. I'm so thankful to God for giving me this opportunity to come here, and for all the people that He places on my path. Mag ik 90 seconden van uw tijd? Mijn naam is Thom de Boo en ik heb iets waar ik u dolgraag over wil vertellen.

 Mijn leven wil ik besteden aan het werken aan Gods Koninkrijk. Ik geloof dat Hij mij hiervoor heeft geroepen. Ik heb van mijn 3e jaar tot mijn 13e jaar in Japan gewoond. Daar heeft God mij laten zien hoe je als christen kunt meewerken in Gods Koninkrijk. Dat was  bijzondere tijd, omdat ik daar elke dag opnieuw kon zien hoe mijn ouders en anderen als christen de armen voedden, de eenzamen een thuis gaven en mensen zonder uitzicht weer hoop gaven. Nu is het mijn beurt! Ik wil -waar ik ook ben- de mensen om mij heen kunnen dienen.

 Kuyper College – Grand Rapids, Michigan

Kuyper College helpt mij daarbij. Dit is een kleine Bijbelschool in Amerika, waar allerlei opleidingen worden gegeven vanuit een gereformeerd wereldbeeld. De leraren zullen mij Bijbelonderwijs geven en mij helpen met een nieuwe bril naar de wereld te kijken. Ik ga daar ook werken. Deze baan zal mij leren zien hoe ik de samenleving kan dienen. En mijn nieuwe vrienden daar zullen met mij hun geloof delen. Zo zal ik dat ook met anderen doen.

Grand Rapids is een logische plek voor mij te studeren. Ik ben tot geloof gekomen in een internationale context. Ik zie mijn toekomst in Nederland en ook weer in het buitenland. De internationale setting die Kuyper College biedt zal vertrouwd zijn en tegelijkertijd uitdagend. Want hoe deel je je geloof met mensen die een andere achtergrond hebben? Dat ga ik daar leren.

Deze studie doe ik voor een jaar. Als ik dan terugkom naar Nederland wil ik deze kennis en ervaringen gelijk toepassen. Het is mijn doel om na mijn studie Internationale Betrekkingen op een ambassade of bij een internationale organisatie te gaan werken.  Als ik uitgezonden wordt wil ik de lokale kerk ondersteunen. Ik vertrouw op God, dat Hij mij zal leiden om alles wat ik geleerd heb op Kuyper College dan te gebruiken om iedereen, hier in Nederland en ver daar buiten, iets van het Koninkrijk te laten zien.

Dit doe ik niet alleen. We kunnen allemaal iets betekenen in deze wereld. Ik wil u daarom vragen of u in de gelegenheid bent om me financieel te steunen. De opleiding bij Kuyper College kost €25.000. Hiervan heb ik al een groot deel bij elkaar. Een ander deel ga ik zelf verdienen door te werken tijdens mijn opleiding. Er rest nog €10.000. Wil je daar over nadenken en ook voor bidden?

Can I have 90 seconds of your time? My name is Thom de Boo and I’ve got something exciting to tell you!

I want to devote my life to helping God build His Kingdom. I believe He has called me to do so. Between the ages of 3 and 13, I lived in Japan. There God showed me how being a Christian means feeding the poor, offering the lonely a community  and bringing hope to the hopeless. Those were very life-changing experiences, because I could see God at work every single day. Now it’s my turn: I want to be able to serve the people around me, wherever I am.

Kuyper College – Grand Rapids, Michigan

Kuyper College will help me with this. It’s a small Bible College in Michigan, where there’s a variety of different studies. Each class is taught from a Reformed worldview. I will focus on biblical studies, cross cultural missions, spiritual formation and many other subjects. My teachers will help me to look at this world through different eyes.

I will also be employed on-campus. My job will teach me to see opportunities to serve the community. And my new friends will share their faith with me, as I will with others.

Grand Rapids is the right place for me to go to college. I have come to faith in an international setting. I see my future both in the Netherlands but also very much in other countries. The international backdrop Kuyper College offers me will be familiar, but it will be a challenge at the same time. How do you share your beliefs with someone with a completely different background? That’s what I’m going to learn.

This is a one-year course. After that I will go back to the Netherlands. When that day comes, I want to immediately put all my new knowledge to action. My goal is to study International Relations and after that work at an embassy or an international organization. Wherever they send me, I'll support the local church. I put my trust in God. He’ll lead me to shine His light, in the Netherlands and in many other places.

I can’t do this on my own. We can all mean something in this world. I would like to ask you if you can permit yourself to support me financially. The costs of studying at Kuyper are $28.000. A significant part of that has already been paid, another part I will earn by working. $12.000 remain. Would you consider contributingand you pray for me? I really appreciate it!
