The Virginia Defender is a statewide, quarterly, all-volunteer community newspaper published by the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality. Established in 2005,  we distributre 15,000 copies in 16 Virginia cities and counties.

Our report on the mass anti-fascist protest in Charlottesville, with photos and videos, can be seen on our website HERE .

Since 2002, the Defenders have been fighting to reclaim and properly memorialize Shockoe Bottom, the downtown district that for the 30 years before the Civil War was the epicenter of the U.S. domestic slave trade.
Since 2006, we have been calling for the five Confederate statues on Richmond's Monument Avenue to come down.

We see these two issues as intimately connected. Leaving the statues up and not properly memorializing Shockoe Bottom both convey the same message: that Black Lives Do Not Matter.

The Autumn issue of the Defender will concentrate on educating the public about the history and meaning of the statues and the Bottom.

Your contribution will help us print more copies and reach more people.  Anything over the goal will go to the next issues. We greatly appreciate your support.
