One of the most amazing families are fighting a battle no family should have to fight. The Ung's are a close outdoor-loving family that love to travel. Kheang is a high school teacher who I met through the Calgary Outdoor Club in 2005. He stood out right away despite his quiet demeanor because of his big, infectious smile! He met Karen, also a passionate outdoors person, in 2007 and they married in August 2008 on Chesterman Beach on Vancouver Island. Karen is a popular blogger with Play Outside Guide and has been extremely busy not only running the household and parenting but ensuring Kheang gets to all of his appointments, receives all of his meds on time and being by his side. They have two beautiful daughters, Miya, 9 years old, and Emi, 7 years old.
Earlier this year Kheang was diagnosed with lung cancer. No one ever expects to hear those words, especially someone who is extremely active, fit and healthy. Kheang has gone through many different treatments and drugs but is now needing a new drug that is almost $10,000 per month. Although their insurance will cover 80%, they are responsible for the remainder of about $2000 a month. This is an outrageous cost no one should have to pay. As Kheang is not working and Karen is not able to be away from home as she is his primary caregiver, they are in need of financial help.
This drug is needed, there is no other option at this point. Let's work together and make this time easier on the Ung's by contributing what we can and spread the word to others. Please help this truly special family so they can get back to all of their outdoor adventures... together.
