Support the Trans Educators Network

The Trans & Non-Binary Educators Network (TEN) was founded in 2015 with the goal of creating a social and professional network for trans, non-binary, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming educators. We wanted to create a space for us to support each other and build our collective knowledge toward transformative education for and with youth.

Since then, the group has grown to over 300 members across North America. There are so many of us! We have groups in five cities that meet on a monthly basis to check in on each other and strategize about how to be the best educators we can be while also taking care of ourselves, and an online group for trans-spectrum educators in remote and rural areas. We've marched in the NYC Trans March, and facilitated workshops at conferences. When Gavin Grimm's case was set to go before the Supreme Court, we contributed to an amicus brief on his behalf. In the SF Bay Area, we recently launched a Critical Pedagogy Collective to more deeply consider what it means to teach from trans knowledge and experience. We did all of this without any funding.

Schools and educational spaces often try to tell us who we are and who we ought to be without our consent. And, schools are often highly gendered places, which can make being a TGNC educator challenging.  As a vulnerable population within the teaching force, we need resources to help us get and keep our jobs as educators, access adequate health care and legal resources, and to build community that will keep us in the work of education.

We also want to build capacity and collective knowledge so that we can more effectively use our powerful position as educators to support trans and gender non-conforming youth in our classrooms and communities, particularly those in who are made vulnerable by the U.S. school system, like queer and trans youth of color, disabled youth, (im)migrant and refugee youth, and youth directly impacted by incarceration, poverty, and violence.

A major goal for TEN in the next year is to develop a website with resources on topics like:
- Connecting and developing projects with other TGNC educators
- Getting and keeping a job in education as a TGNC person
- Accessing and advocating for trans-competent health, legal, and institutional resources
- Navigating gender transition at work
- Teaching about gender through an intersectional framework
- Advocating for TGNC and other vulnerable youth
- Tools for all educators who want to support TGNC folks, like recommended children's literature, guidance on how to be in solidarity with and support for TGNC colleagues.

Accomplishing these goals will take time and labor. We want to pay a TGNC person to create our website, and pay TGNC educators to develop resources to fill that website.

Once we've raised enough money for a website and paying our members to produce resources, the remaining funds will be used for professional development and support funds for scholarships for our members to access resources they need.

We hope to raise $10,000 toward this goal before 2019. Will you support us?

And, if you are a TGNC educator, please join us via our currently-very-modest website at www.transeducators.com
