Former Merced High School  & Atwater Elementary School District teacher and principal can use a hand up!

Brandi Bailey and her husband decided that their little family needed a change last year after over 20 years of teaching.  She sold everything, resigned from her Principal position, and the family purchased a KOA camp ground in Durango, Colorado.

The campground opened in May. A beautiful little park. Not long after the opening a wild fire broke out. The area was evacuated. Brandi and her husband stayed behind to allow the firefighters to set up camp in their cabins during the firefighter rest periods. They were not able to run their camp or make a living for their family for almost a month. Brandi's husband was a firefighter and they knew they had to support the the firefighters and their new community.

Fires over ... Time to get back to life! Everything is going well! However,  last week monsoon rains rolled through.  The rains washed away the burned out mountain side. A mudslide leveled Brandi's home,  livelihood,  and shattered her world.

They had invested everything and lost everything in less than a year.  There will be insurance claims but we all know that will be a lengthy process.

I had an overwhelming feeling that I needed to do something to help, help Brandi get back on her feet.  After speaking to Brandi she expressed that they are truly struggling.  They invested everything. Brandi,  will be so grateful and appreciative for any assistance that you can provide at this time.  Let's give Brandi a hand up...  Not a hand out! That's exactly what she would do for all of us!

I have included links to the fire and mudslides and photos of the before and after on the KOA park.  It is complete devastation.  31524866_153223234271185_r.jpeg31524866_1532232361535317_r.jpeg31524866_1532232378433369_r.jpeg31524866_1532232392304283_r.jpeg31524866_153223241062685_r.jpeg

Thank you to everyone for having our family in your prayers and thoughts - completely overwhelmed by everyone's generosity! THANK YOU! We continue to have to leave the campground when monsoon rains come, due to the uncertainty of the debris flows... it truly is minute to minute...

A message from Brandi & Jeff

"There are no words to explain the gratitude that I feel with the help from a community I moved from... I am so grateful for the people that were in our lives and continue to be.... Thank You to all that have helped.... I dont even know what to say.... This is the reason I still believe and have hope...."

A message from Brandi and Jeff Bailey

On June 1, the 416 fire started, and our family was 1 month into the campground season of our dreams. The fire halted business and our lives for 4 weeks - fire, ash, and smoke became our regular. We housed the fire crews at the camp and waited for relief... there was to be none. The fire impacted the entire community of Durango, and we all tried to rally and pull together. What would have been one of our biggest months for business, was not.

On July 17, as I worked the store alone welcoming campers in and preparing for the next day, I heard the storm come... it was loud and the rain falling consistently... within minutes, I heard the entire wall in the store buckle and mud and debris came rushing in! It will be a sound I never forget... Braden, my son, was with his grandparents, which I will be forever grateful! I was able to put my backpack from the store on and head down to save lives. A gas leak was apparent, so I set out to help everyone out of the campground.

I banged on cabin windows, carried babies up the side of the campground mountain - children I didn't even get to know before this tragedy - but my schooling helped with keeping them calm and comforted through this. I carried elder campers on my back up the hill with everything I had... it was a strength I did not know I had....

After the storm had passed, my husband and I along with our 3 year old soon realized we were not unscathed by the mudslide. Our cars were greatly impacted and still unknown to what extent, our house is substandard to live in with the mud/debris that has accumulated underneath to destroy piping, ducting, etc. No natural gas for a long time..... Currently, we are in a rental car.

We came to Durango to live the American dream as business owners, and we had no idea the natural devastation that would stand between that dream and our reality. We are both very proud people, but this is about our son, Braden Kurt Bailey, who needs normalcy and time to mentally prepare for his biggest job ever - heading to school! Education is sooooo important, and we want that for him... we may need to change living arrangements ASAP, and he starts school in roughly 27 days. I want him to be able to have the time and necessities to be successful... as a recent educator, I know how important this is and worry that I will not be able to do for my own child as I have for so many in my career.

Any and all help for our family is much appreciated and reassures that Grace is still the fiber that keeps us all together and important in one another's lives.... I am too proud to ask for me, but I have learned I cannot be for my son and his awaiting future. Our family will need help, as we use this summer season to live through the winter... it's much more than that now, because we are likely to need to find alternate living and another means of living.

Please help with whatever you can through this difficult time. Everything is appreciated for our son the most.

Thank you,

Jeff and Brandi Bailey
