Support Morija Arts Centre in Lesotho

In August of 2018 I was a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Lesotho visiting a fellow artist and close friend who was living and working in Morija. She welcomed me to the peaceful place tucked into the tree-filled mountainside. It was difficult not to fall in love with the history, the community and most of all the atmosphere that enveloped me in a sanctuary that seemed to say that anything was possible. Since my first journey there, I have not left. 

The Morija Arts Centre is the only organisation of its kind in Lesotho. The MAC is currently a gallery and a work facility housing textile, animation, ceramics, jewelry, grass weaving studios but we are yearning to be so much more. We host events such as the Tiny Gallery concert, we hold after school programs for primary schools in Morija, and facilitate workshop series for all ages to come a learn a new skill. 


What inspires me the most about the Morija Arts Centre is not only the space and resources it provides but the community of conscious artists of all ages and backgrounds that has formed around it. In a country with a 39% youth unemployment rate, it provides opportunities for individuals to learn, create and grow.

Currently the Morija Arts Centre is staffed by three volunteers who are also artists at the centre. They are essential to the day-to-day operations of the facilities and gallery and education and training programs. With this fundraiser, I am raising funds to help their workload and the other general costs of running the Morija Arts Centre, like arts supplies, travel, and new equipment.

It's difficult for artists to find a place anywhere in the world. In Lesotho, that challenge is even more strongly defined by hinderances in finance and culture. But the Morija Arts Centre is alive and well and we'd like to take our mission even further.
