Dear Family and Friends,

I have been traveling for the last 7 months, and throughout my travels I have met so many incredible people with unbelievable stories. Stories that made me laugh, stories that made me cry, some made me angry and upset, and others made me feel empowered and inspired.

I would like to share a story with you that made me feel all kinds of emotions.

This is the story of Paulina and Morgan.


Paulina and Morgan, young professionals in their late 20's, living in England, had been saving money for a fun, adventurous and relaxing two week vacation in South East Asia for years. This summer they finally headed on their long awaited and deserving vacation. They were having a wonderful time until they got to Singapore. It was on their second day in Singapore (18th of May 2017) when Morgan began to have trouble breathing, having been together for 7 years, Paulina knew something was seriously wrong. She had never seen Morgan like this so she immediately called an ambulance and since that day, the hospital became their new home.


It has now been almost 4 months since Morgan has been in and out of ICU fighting a severe lung condition. He is coherent most of the time and is able to listen and understand, however, he is unable to speak due to the ventilator and tracheostomy, so he communicates by writing. He has a red clipboard and pen by his bedside at all times. Paulina has been dedicated to his recovery and has been by his bedside every day for the last months. I spent time at the hospital with the couple and I was in complete awe watching Paulina sit at the edge of Morgan's bed with so much optimism in her eyes.
It was obvious to see that Paulina does her best to keep Morgan positive and uplifted. The first time I met Paulina, I would have never guessed she was going through something so difficult. It was beautiful to see a couple smiling through their pain even after almost four months of on going physical, mental, emotional pain and suffering and financial stress.
All of their future plans, dreams and hopes have been shattered, yet they still smile and hum to songs playing on the radio.


I felt helpless sitting in the room, watching the two of them communicating through their eyes. There was nothing I could do to alleviate the physical pain Morgan was experiencing. Comforting words and prayers can only ease the mental and emotional stress for so long. Their insurance claim was declined as it was determined that the lung condition was pre-existing, even though Morgan had never been diagnosed with it. The only real upside in this situation is that this happened in Singapore, a country with excellent healthcare, however, it comes at a very high cost. The couple is grateful for the wonderful doctors and nurses at Tan Tock Seng Hospital but their goal is to get Morgan back to England and have him treated there to reduce medical expenses.


I was shocked to learn how much their current outstanding bill was (as at 30th of August 2017 it was S$217,000) and as each day passes, the bill gets higher and higher. Currently Morgan is not fit to fly by commercial airline with medical evacuation team due to need of mechanical ventilation and pneumothorax. The couple has to wait for Morgan to wean off the ventilator to start any arrangement of taking him back to England. The cost ranges from S$40,000 to S$85,000, depending on Morgan's condition and fitness, as well as requirements for his safe transport.
The last thing they need to be worrying about right now is the first thing they discuss every morning; medical expenses.

We cannot take away their physical, mental, or emotional pain, but we can help reduce their financial burden so that Morgan can focus all of his energy on getting better. Kochani,    Poświęćcie chwilę na przeczytanie historii Pauliny i Morgana. Polka i Nigeryjczyk poznali się w Polsce podczas studiów. Są młodymi, pracowitymi ludźmi, mieszkają na stałe w Anglii.
Przez kilka lat oszczędzali na zasłużony urlop, beztroski czas relaksu i odpoczynku od codzienności. Wreszcie wyjechali na dwu tygodniowe wakacje w Azji Południowo-Wschodniej. Spełnienie się tego marzenia stało się jednocześnie najtrudniejszą przeszkodą, z którą przyszło im się dotychczas w życiu zmierzyć.
Podczas pobytu w Singapurze, Morgan źle się poczuł i 18 maja 2017 trafił do szpitala. Od tego dnia szpital stał się ich domem. Dodatkowym utrapieniem jest ubezpieczyciel, który odmówil wypłaty ubezpieczenia argumentując, że Morgana choroba jest powiązana z jego wcześniejszymi problemami zdrowotnymi, mimo że nigdy wcześniej nie były one zdiagnozowane.   Wszystkie ich przyszłe plany legły w gruzach, marzą jedynie o powrocie Morgana do zdrowia. Minęły prawie 4 miesiące. Morgan obecnie przebywa na oddziale intensywnej terapii, walcząc z ciężką chorobą płuc. Jest przytomny, rozumie co się dzieje, ale nie może mówić, ponieważ jest podłączony do respiratora. Konieczne było również wykonanie tracheostomii. Morgan komunikuje się więc tylko pisemnie.  Codzienność Pauliny w ciągu ostatnich kilku miesięcy to długie czuwanie przy łóżku Morgana. Pomimo ciężaru całej sytuacji w jej oczach ciągle widać optymizm i siłę. Po prawie czterech miesiącach zmęczenia fizycznego i psychicznego, bólu i cierpienia, wciąż znajdują w sobie siły by walczyć dalej i się uśmiechać.    Leczenie w Singapurze to świetna opieka medyczna, ale też bardzo wysokie koszty. Morgan i Paulina są wdzięczni za opiekę wspaniałym lekarzom i pielęgniarkom w szpitalu Tan Tock Seng, jednak ich celem jest przetransportowanie Morgana z powrotem do Anglii i kontynuowanie leczenia na miejscu celem zredukowania kosztów. Saldo niespłaconych rachunków jest szokujące! Na dzień 30 sierpnia 2017 wynosi 217 000 SGD (ok. 578 000 zl). Każdy dzień to nieustająca walka, ale też strach o piętrzące się w zastraszającym tempie koszty.  Obecnie stan Morgana nie pozwala na transport komercyjnymi liniami lotniczymi (z zespołem do ewakuacji medycznej). Para musi czekać, aż Morgan zostanie odłączony od respiratora, aby rozpocząć przygotowania do powrotu. Koszt powrotu Morgana z Singapuru waha się w przedziale od 40.000 SGD do 85.000 SGD (ok. 107 000zl - 226 000zl) w zależności od jego kondycji zdrowotnej, a także wymogów dotyczących bezpieczeństwa transportu.   Nie jesteśmy w stanie zdjąć z nich fizycznego i psychicznego cierpienia, ale możemy zmniejszyć ich obciążenie finansowe, aby Morgan mógł skoncentrować całą swoją energię na dążeniu do powrotu do zdrowia.   Serdecznie dziękujemy z góry za Waszą pomoc!
