Support Longmont's Proposed Code

Prairie Protection Colorado is hard at work introducing a municipal code in Longmont, Colorado that will ensure prairie dogs are given every chance possible to continue living on Colorado's prairies. This code introduces legislation that requires landowners to make a good faith effort to relocate prairie dogs prior to any attempt to exterminate. In addition, this code will ensure that if there are no relocation sites for the prairie dogs, the owners of the land will have to use carbon monoxide to kill the colony instead of the painful and inhumane rodenticides that are currently used as a result of their low cost.

Advocates are tiring from the constant annihilations of prairie dogs up and down Colorado's Front Range resulting from inhumane and dangerous poisons. As colony after colony are needlessly destroyed, this code would ensure that the prairie dogs and their prairie communities are given a chance to be relocated instead of exterminated in the city of Longmont. Of course we all wish that prairie dogs would be left alone and allowed to exist in their current homes, but due to the rampant development of our state, we are unable to fight that battle in most cases. The next best step we can make is to ensure that these beautiful animals are given the chance to be moved onto protected Open Space by allowing advocates the time needed to secure relocation sites. With your help, we are devoted to doing everything in our power to open up public land and put protections in place that will ensure the survival of this rapidly declining keystone species that is in danger of extinction without our help.
