LGBT* Unity is a a group of LGBTQ+ asylum-seekers, refugees and their allies which meets fortnightly in Glasgow, and has been doing so for nearly three years.
Our aim is to support and empower LGBTQ+ people to stand up against the racism and homophobia of the asylum process and to combat isolation through making a safe space for people to support and care for one another.
Our group is big, with meetings having between 25-50 people travelling for every meeting. As our group is the only space specifically for LGBTQ+ asylum-seekers in Scotland, it is a vital lifeline for people in combating loneliness and they travel from all over the country to attend.
One of the ways that the Home Office keeps people isolated is through their travel poverty, and people routinely have to choose between groceries and travel. To combat this, we pay for a day ticket (£4.50) for each person to attend each meeting. This is the only cost of our group, as no-one is paid, and we use the space of an LGBT charity. So one meeting usually costs between £100-200.
We rely largely on donations and occasionally on funding. Just now we are in the process of applying for some funding, but our funds have dropped drastically low. We are trying to raise £1000 to help our members be able to attend our meetings, and to sustain our group for another few months.
Just a £9 donation will pay for two people to attend a meeting.
We are only able to go on making this space through the mutual aid, support and solidarity of the community around the group so please donate generously and share far and wide!
