Support Kumsa at EARTH University

Hello Facebook family and friends,

As for us all I’m sure it’s been quite a year... for me it’s been from moving back from Portland to Hawaii in October, to my Yoga Teacher training, to my amazing organic farming internship in Costa Rica, and now to the lava erupting in our backyards. It’s been an incredible year of many ups and downs and now, I am beginning a new chapter. As some of you know, I was recently in Costa Rica at EARTH University doing an Organic Farming internship in March of this year. Going there for the month was a way for me to experience Costa Rica and the University to see if it’s a place I really wanted to be, and it was absolutely the best experience I have ever had. I completely fell in love with the place and their vision to teach young people from all over the world to build a better world through sustainable agriculture and engineering. I have applied and been accepted to this amazing place. However, the University does not provide any financial aid for US students since their scholarship funds are reserved for funding students of need in 3rd world countries. And so, it will be fully my responsibility to gather the resources to be able to afford the 4 year program. EARTH is a little bit different than most colleges: it is a four year program but they run year round and offer a degree that is halfway between a B.A. and Master’s degree, which in Spanish is called a Licenciatura, in the field of Agricultural Engineering. If I can gather the funds to go, I will begin at the end of August with their four month Spanish language immersion program while living with a Costa Rican family and taking Spanish classes at the University all day, so I can become fluent in Spanish before I officially begin school in January 2019. Going to school at EARTH would be an absolute dream come true! I’m getting close to achieving the financial goal and need to raise a minimum of $5,000 more each year to close the final gap. Any additional amount I can raise will help me reduce my need for student loans. I’m reaching out to all of you to ask for any support you feel able and willing to offer to help me reach my goal.

On another note, alongside my EARTH University fundraising campaign, I have released a four song EP “Fly On”. Music is also a big part of my life, and this year I have been dedicated to recording songs I wrote during my two years living and studying in Portland, Oregon. Michael Surprenant at Mana Studios did an incredible job, mixing, mastering, drumming and audio engineering these four songs:

-Fly On (Michael Surprenant: Drums,
Pat Eskildsen: Guitar, Matt Spencer : Bass, Sarah Bethany: Backing vocals, ADele Wynn: violin

-Set the Brakes (Michael Surprenant: Drums,
Pat Eskildsen: Guitar, Matt Spencer : Bass, Sarah Bethany: Synth

-Turn Your Head Around (Michael Surprenant: Drums,
Pat Eskildsen: Guitar, Matt Spencer: Bass, Sarah Bethany: Backing vocals

-Burn It Down (Kumsa Maphalala: vocals,
Kumsa Maphalala: guitar
(all proceeds for this song will be going toward lava relief in our community)

I am so so happy with how everyone who has been involved in these songs has truly brought them to life and I couldn’t imagine a better way for me to conclude this period of time in my life and begin a new chapter. I will be using the release of this EP as a way to help me raise money to support my studies at EARTH University.

Much much love,

-Kumsa
