Support Jono and Lisa

$112,540 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 1,859 people in 13 months
Our dear friend Jono, a Senior Constable with the NSW police force, was struck by a car on Friday 16th February whilst setting up an RBT in Leumeah. He was just a bloke going to work, supporting his family and protecting his community. He and a colleague, Matt Foley, were both hit and seriously injured. Jono sustained life threatening injuries, with his leg traumatically severed in the accident. Today, because of the sheer stupidity of the driver looking at his phone, he is facing the reality of life as an amputee.

Lisa and Jono have a long and arduous road ahead of them. They've been inundated with messages of love and support, all of which I know are so greatly appreciated. There have also been dozens of requests for how people can help. We all feel helpless and just want to support this beautiful family. Probably the only thing that's actually within our power right now is to help ease their financial stresses so they can focus on what's important, Jono's recovery. That's why we, Lisa's colleagues from Campbelltown Hospital, set up this GoFund Me page. To give everyone somewhere productive to channel their grief and support. If you can spare any amount, no matter how small, I know they'll be eternally grateful. At the conclusion of the designated timeframe set by GoFundMe all the monies raised will be handed over to Lisa and Jono to use towards paying the mortgage and bills as they see fit.

Sharing this page would also be hugely appreciated, simply to raise awareness about using mobile phones whilst driving. Next time you think of reaching for your phone when you’re behind the wheel, please think of Jono. Think of his whole life now so dramatically altered. Think of his kids and wife who will share this journey with him and be just as heavily impacted by it. Think of your own families waiting for you at home. Think of the people in the cars around you not as nameless, faceless nobodies but as husbands, wives, sons and daughters. People who are loved and just want to get home safe too.

Thank you so much xxx
Everyone deserves to go home safely.

Hello there,

Just wanted to pop back in and post another update here. It's been a month since my last update and almost five weeks since Jono's accident. It feels like it happened a lifetime ago.

What spurred me to write again today is the flurry of donations that have come in today! Thank you very much to those donors for getting the campaign moving again. I've just had a look at the stats for the first time in a while and I'm astonished to see that the page has been visited 47 times just today! Even more staggering is that it has been viewed 120,000 times in total. Far beyond the monetary donations, which are obviously warmly welcomed and hugely appreciated, the fact that the "get your hand off it" message is still making the rounds is the true hero of this story. Please keep sharing the page. It's when we lapse in our diligence and pick up that phone that the next accident will happen. The next victim could be someone you know, someone you love. It could even be you. Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Stay safe people. xx

This time one week ago I was sitting down in front of the computer with a whiskey for courage and attempting to fumble my way through setting up a GoFundMe page. 7 days later and the adrenaline has settled, reality is sinking in. The phenomenal success of this page has kept me buoyant all week, given me a focus for my energy and been a very welcome distraction. Watching that tally grow brought us all a near euphoric joy. Now, the page has served its purpose and activity is starting to wane. You’ve all raised a phenomenal $105,800 and the page has been shared 14,000 times!!!!!! It’s nearing its retirement and there is now room in my thoughts for less welcome things. Predictably, heartache is filling the void. I know this is a feeling shared tenfold by Lisa, Jono and their family as they travel further down this new path and it tears me apart.

Jono has remained selfless and strong throughout. Lisa has been solid as a rock behind him. The rest of us fumble along around them trying our best to smooth the road. Your donations and heartfelt messages have been an absolute godsend. Jono has been up and mobilising with a frame and I’m sure he felt you all there behind him.

We’ve all made resolutions in the past in response to some event or experience that’s frightened us. “I’ll never speed again”, “I’ll never do ...... again”. Unfortunately, that commitment tends to lessen with time, often as that initial fear or shock that drove it starts to fade. Before we know it we find that spedo ticking higher and higher again. Now is when the risk is growing that we will become complacent and start reaching for our phones again in the car. Please, the next time you feel the urge to answer that message, or just check Facebook at the lights, tap your right foot on the floor and think of Jono. It’s just not worth it.

Please keep sharing the page to keep this issue forefront in everyone’s minds. Thank you all again for your support and generosity. You have been the shining light throughout this. Xxxx

Hi All,
I just wanted to say another massive thank you for getting behind this campaign. To be honest the momentum this has gotten has been a little frightening. It feels like we've created a little something and it's grown into a huge beast and is now running wild! Thankfully it's a wonderful beast and we're thrilled to see it spreading it's wings. Can you believe this has reached the other side of the world in the UK?!

Thank you so very much for everyone who has donated. My naive hope of achieving $10,000 to give Lisa and Jono some breathing room with the mortgage has been utterly annihilated and I couldn't be happier!

There have been 83,000 visits to this GoFundMe page! That's hopefully 83,000 people who will think of Jono when they reach for their phone whilst driving. I'm hoping that thought will have them putting their hands back on the wheel and their eyes back on the road. I think that's the true victory here. The money you've raised is life changing, but the awareness you've created is life saving.

Thank you xx
