Support Young Adults Attending Griffin’s Place Business Communication Skills Series!

Griffin’s Place was created to support underserved individuals within the Intellectual/ Developmental Disability [I/DD] community with the tools, resources, and opportunities to lead a fuller life. In order to do this, we are seeking your help to sponsor individuals in attending our Business Communication Skills series. This new program was thoughtfully developed by licensed Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Pathologists to address and navigate the barriers those with disabilities commonly face when pursuing employment. Through this 15 week course, series participants will gain skills and materials that will propel them in their search for lasting and meaningful employment.

Inspiration Behind the Business Communication Skills Course
This is Griffin, a young man who is on the autism spectrum and communicates primarily through an electronic speech device. As he was nearing adulthood, a dedicated group of professionals and family members worked with Griffin to identify his strengths and build on the areas where he had room to grow. Through this process and a great deal of hard work from Griffin, he was hired by Metro West Ambulance as a Vehicle Service Technician [VST] where he is able to apply his knack for organization into assembling the ambulances emergency medicine kits. He has now been working at Metro West for over 4 years and recently won the VST of the year award!

Our hope is to replicate the success Griffin has experienced through offering the resources he received to others in the community who also experience employment barriers. To achieve this goal, Griffin’s Place developed the Business Communication Skills series which was thoughtfully designed and will be led by the skilled therapists who have assisted Griffin throughout his employment journey. We firmly believe that with the right supports, everyone has the ability to succeed in the workplace and we are confident that this series will propel participants in their search to finding lasting and meaningful employment.

This program is designed to help individuals with disabilities to navigate the barriers they face when pursuing employment.

The 3 Part Business Communication Skills Series Highlights:

101 - Interviewing Skills: Students will identify and learn how to highlight their strengths during interviews as well as learn essential components of interviewing such as greetings, answering questions, and have the opportunity to practice interviewing.

102 - Conversational Skills: Students will learn communication skills specific to speaking with employers, co-workers, customers, and over the phone. They will learn how each of these audiences requires and allows for different types of social interactions and be able to determine the appropriateness of their communication in the workplace.

103 - Teamwork & Problem Solving: Students will learn how to effectively solve problems in the workplace as well as gain tools that will allow them to work as a part of a team and learn key social skills needed to successfully participate as a team member in the workplace.

We had great success during the pilot of the Business Communication Skills series in 2018 with participants showing improvements across all categories!

Our goal is to offer the resources and trainings for individuals with I/DD to build their communication skills in order to engage more fully with others in their communities. We believe that with the appropriate skills, supports, and opportunity - everyone has the capacity to lend their unique talents and abilities as part of the workforce and greater community.

About Griffin’s Place
Griffin's Place is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering teens and young adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities [I/DD] to successfully engage in their community through structured social gatherings and skill building opportunities. Since our inception in 2014, our focus has been to equip our participants with the customized tools, resources and opportunities to successfully lead a more independent lifestyle. The events that we host are thoughtfully developed and instructed by professionals in the I/DD field which includes a team of Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, behavior interventionists and more. Some of the trainings and activities we have hosted include: a Business Communication Skills course, Cooking 101, sensory friendly activities (e.g. movies, ice skating, etc.) as well as art nights, game nights and dances. We are able to provide community events and resources because of the generosity and donations of the community.

Our Mission
The mission of Griffin’s Place is to provide teens and adults experiencing I/DD with a customized path to independence through offering unique experiences to identify, promote and build the capacity for all individuals to actively participate in every aspect of life.
