As many of you know Gemma Smith  has now made it home and starting a long recovery period, at the moment she is unable to load bear on her legs and using wheelchair which makes the stairs impossible unless carried . She had been quoted for a stair lift and a number of other aids that will aid her be a little less stranded in her recovery , however the insurance at this stage is not paying.

This is us where we come in , I am hoping the dive community, her friends, students, colleagues and friends will help by donating what you are able, every little helps and will soon add up and enable her to purchase these devices

I know Gemma would never ask for this sort of help but I have checked and she is ok with me opening this and raising this request on her behalf and would be so grateful if people are willing and want to help at this difficult time.

Many Thanks for all your support

Update from gemma - When I lost a large section of my lower right leg to a massive E-coli infection I had to have a substantial amount of skin and tissue from my left thigh removed to act as a skin graft to cover it. I thought I'd always be embarrassed of my scars, but actually I'm proud of them! That graft is what has allowed me to keep my right leg this far, and come next week I should know if the E-coli infection has fully gone from the leg bone or whether I need a section of the bone removed and yet more surgeries. Whatever happens though I'm not going to focus on what my body ends up looking like, but on what my body is capable of achieving

Update for gemma on Friday - Despite bursting into tears of relief and happiness as soon as this photo was taken, this is the first time I have 'walked' in almost two months and I couldn't contain my excitement!! As someone who loves being busy and adventurous I've really struggled with feeling confined and trapped the last few weeks. Suddenly I feel free again!!

Update from Gemma today - I almost feel too overwhelmed to post this, but for everyone asking after me I wanted to share the news: The last couple weeks have been tough, and I have been forced to confront the reality that losing my leg was getting more and more likely. Today was a final attempt at fitting an internal metal plate to my bone...and it worked!!!! Over the seven hours (!!) of surgery the surgeons were able to stabilise the crushed bone and then cover the wound with skin and tissue removed from my thigh. The next 48 hours are crucial for recovery, but IF the skin grafts take then truly it will be a triumph!!!! Good vibes and thoughts always appreciated!!!

I spent a couple of hours with gemma in Southmead hospital bristol yesterday , after several operations and a lot of Iv antibiotics looks like they are getting control on the infection in the right leg, as this stabilises next op will look at putting metal work back in. Gemma is holding up well bearing in mind what she is going through and has started physio exercises on the left ankle
She is going to be in for a while yet and visitors are welcome - if your in the area pop in for a chat , chocolate and fruit also gratefully received :-).
