Wednesday, June 13, 2018, was a day that Marcelo and Jocy will never forget. What they thought was routine MRI as a precaution before scheduling a common surgery to correct Valentina’s lazy eye turned into their worst nightmare. Little Valentina, only 18-months old was diagnosed with a tumor on her brainstem. This one routine test and unexpected medical answer turned the Guiulfo Gamallo’s family life upside down. Instead of heading home to play with her big brother, six-year-old, Mauricio, Valentina was immediately admitted into Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
The neurosurgeon explained that the tumor was in a very difficult area to access, as a surgery to remove it could cause devastating and irreversible damage to Valentina's vital functioning. Yet, they needed to perform an emergency surgery to release the fluid accumulating in the ventricles of her brain—causing it tremendous pressure, and they also needed to perform a biopsy of the tumor.
In a little less than a month, Valentina has undergone three surgeries: the emergency surgery to release brain pressure and to autopsy the tumor, a second one to place a shunt on her brain to drain the fluid and reduce pressure, and a third to insert a port where chemotherapy will be administered. The tumor is not cancerous but it is also too dangerous to remove, so we all remain hopeful that a long-term chemotherapy treatment, beginning on July 12th, will reduce the Grade1 tumor.
The tumor, or as little brother, Mauricio is calling it, “the cloud” has begun impeding Valentina’s eyesight, so she is wearing a patch for most of the day at the recommendation of her pediatric ophthalmologist. Nevertheless, Marcelo, Jocy, Mauricio, and Valentina – along with their family and friends all over the world – are ready for the fight of their lives. Valentina, meaning “healthy and strong” needs your help, love, support, and prayers as she fights for her life—she truly is “Valentina the Brave.”
The Guiulfo Gamallo’s have a long road ahead of them. One that will be exhausting both physically and emotionally but also financially. They are deeply grateful to their family and friends for their continue support and willingness to help. Already in this journey, they have found wonderful people ready to give them a hand to help or a hug to comfort what they are going through. The doctors and nurses have been doing a phenomenal job and doing their very best for Valentina’s health. The prayers are coming from around the world and from different religious, which is helping this family to keep strong and faithful.

El miércoles 13 de junio de 2018 fue un día que Marcelo y Jocy nunca olvidarán. Lo que ellos pensaban que era una resonancia magnética de rutina antes de programar una cirugía común para corregir el estrabismo de Valentina, se convirtió en su peor pesadilla. A la pequeña Valentina, de sólo 18 meses, le diagnosticaron un tumor en el cerebro. Esta única prueba de rutina y una respuesta médica inesperada cambiaron la vida familiar de los Guiulfo Gamallo. En lugar de que Valentina regresara a su casa para jugar con su hermano mayor, Mauricio (de seis años), ella fue hospitalizada de inmediato en el Hospital de Niños de Atlanta.
El neurocirujano les explicó que el tumor estaba en un área muy difícil de acceder, y que una cirugía para extirparlo podría causar daños devastadores e irreversibles en el desarrollo de Valentina. Sin embargo, se necesitaba realizar una cirugía de emergencia para obtener una biopsia del tumor y liberar el líquido que se acumulaba en los ventrículos de su cerebro, causando a su vez presión en el nervio óptico.
En poco menos de un mes, Valentina ha tenido tres cirugías: la cirugía de emergencia para liberar la presión en el cerebro y obtener la biopsia del tumor, una segunda para colocar una válvula en el cerebro para drenar el líquido y reducir la presión, y una tercera para insertar un puerto donde se administrará quimioterapia. El tumor no es canceroso, sin embargo, debido a su ubicación, es muy peligroso para remover, por lo que Valentina necesitará un tratamiento de quimioterapia a largo plazo, el cual comenzará el 12 de julio para reducir el tumor de Grado 1.
El tumor, o como su hermano Mauricio lo llama, "una nube" ha comenzado a afectar la visión de Valentina, por lo que ella está usando un parche por recomendación de su oftalmólogo pediátrico en su ojito hasta que Valentina haya superado la quimioterapia y el tumor se haya reducido. A pesar de todo esto, Marcelo, Jocy, Mauricio y Valentina, junto con sus familiares y amigos de todo el mundo, están listos para afrontar el mayor reto de sus vidas. Valentina, que significa "saludable y fuerte", necesita de la ayuda de todos, amor, apoyo y oraciones mientras ella lucha por su vida y demuestra que ella es realmente “Valentina la Valiente".
Los Guiulfo Gamallo tienen un largo camino por delante. Uno que será agotador tanto física como emocionalmente, pero también financieramente. Ellos están profundamente agradecidos con sus familiares y amigos por su continuo apoyo y voluntad de ayudar. Ya en este camino difícil, han encontrado personas maravillosas listas para darles una mano o un abrazo reconfortante para sobrellevar por todo lo que están pasando.
