Support for Tina Chernoff

Tina has been my synchronized swimming coach for the past eight years.  Through this time, she has become a close friend who has gone above and beyond to help me overcome many obstacles that I’ve encountered in my life.  Tina’s goal is for all of us to be successful athletes and she does this by placing us before her own needs.  She has impacted the lives of many athletes through her constant, unwavering support and commitment to our personal development both within and outside of coaching.  Tina is a mentor, confidant and friend who’s always there to listen and support.  Even though Tina is struggling through this potentially life-threatening infection, she manages to remain a positive force and continues to motivate her athletes to succeed.

In January 2018, Tina was put on an antibiotic. Unfortunately, the antibiotic had an unintended result and she developed clostridium difficile (here is info from https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/c-difficile/symptoms-causes/syc-20351691) better known as C-Diff. This infection attacks the large intestine with toxins and leaves spores that are very hard to kill. Tina has fought this since February/March with a variety of other antibiotics, which has been the only way to try and cure this potentially life-threatening infection. She has gone through four courses of antibiotics, with one set lasting for about four months.

This past week Tina's condition got worse and she was sent to the hospital via ambulance. She was admitted for six days to manage the pain and to try some other treatments. She is now at home resting but remains on an antibiotic to keep the C Diff under control. They have told her if the symptoms return, she is to come back to the Emergency Department asap.

If the damage continues, Tina faces ongoing medication that is hard on the body. Furthermore, there is a possibility of having the damaged parts or her full large intestine removed. Both options are not great; however, it may be the only way to save her life at that point.

There is one other option which is a fecal transplant, but it is still considered experimental.  Her first option is going to a clinic in Calgary, however, if this doesn't work out, there are a few other clinics in Ontario and in the USA.  In this procedure, they will take healthy gut flora from a donor and place it in Tina's bowel, in hopes of taking over the C Diff and growing a healthy gut of proper flora. It has a 90 percent success rate but occasionally has to be done a few times in order for it to work. Since the clinic in Calgary is in research trials, the costs for the treatment are not covered by health care or their own coverage.

Update - Looks like Calgary is happening and Tina is just waiting for a date. Hopefully it works the first time.

Tina's family is doing everything they can for her. Michael, Cadence and Aurora are being very helpful while still going to school and taking in their activities. Tina did most of the driving  for their activities so that is now on Daryl, who is finding his way around the city with ease. They are all hopeful of a fast and full recovery so they get their mom back full time.

Please help me to support Tina as she does her best to beat C-Diff for good! Any donation is appreciated.  Many hands make light work and will help make these expenses a little lighter for Tina and her family.
