We are raising money to help Souleymane Porgo, a street vendor who has sold books & handbags for more than 10  years at 149th Street and 3rd Avenue in the Bronx. Souleymane was viciously attacked by five people on Tuesday and is now in a coma, with a fractured skull, at Lincoln Hospital. The attack was captured on video and has been circulated widely in local  media. Police are searching for these criminals now.

Souleymane, an immigrant from Burkina Faso, has a wife and two small daughters. He is a member of our organization, the Street Vendor Project . We visited him and his family at the hospital this morning to offer our support.  Any funds will be donated to Souleymane and his family to help pay medical bills, lost wages while Souleymane is out of work, and other expenses.

We reached thirty thousand dollars. Simply incredible!

Many people have been thanking me and the Street Vendor Project, which we appreciate, but of course it is all 810 of you who deserve the thanks.

We hope that Souleymane will be well enough soon to be able to thank you himself in some way.

We have not bothered the family after our initial visit to the hospital last weekend, where we gave Debbie the first $5K. But with things quieting down a bit, and Souleymane feeling better, we intend to go by later this week to check up on them, and make arrangements to get them the remainder of the money.

In the meantime, a group of about 10 SVP members and friends walked around the neighborhood in the rain yesterday posting WANTED posters to try to catch one of the two remaining perpetrators, Joshua Cruz - the first guy to hit Souleymane when he was on the ground.

Some more good news!

First, Souleymane has awoken from his coma and is able to respond to questions with some basic body language.

The second is that the police have caught two more of the attackers, meaning that 3 of the 5 are now in custody. We heard all this from the family yesterday, but I just searched and actually the local news has done a great job of sticking with this story - more details here: http://abc7ny.com/news/vendor-brutally-attacked-wakes-up-from-coma/1982505/

That means 2 of Souleymane's assailants are still on the loose. Tomorrow, at 11 am, a group of street vendors, supporters, and other people who care are going to meet at 149th Street and 3rd Avenue to post "Wanted" posters and talk to people around the neighborhood.

If you are local, please feel free to join us. Just drop me a line through GoFundMe with your details. It's supposed to rain, but unless it really seems like a hurricane, we'll be out there.

Thanks!

We just got back from the press conference at Souleymane's spot. Many press outlets and organizations and elected officials (Council Members Salamanca and Gibson esp) were there. Thank you to the organizers for the chance to speak about the need for justice for Souleymane.

But the big news is that the police seem to have arrested someone in the case: https://twitter.com/ErinClarkeTV/status/861969891825418240

That is all we know but we'll send an update when we get more details.

$21,000 -- we never would have imagined the community would be so generous! On behalf of Souleymane and his family, thank you.

We are taking seriously our responsibility as guardians of your donations, and want to keep updating all (currently) 570 of you. So here is a quick video we shot on Saturday at the hospital.

Tomorrow morning there is a press conference at 10 am at Souleymane's spot at 149th and 3rd, come on by if you are in the neighborhood. The media are still interested in this case, which is good because it will keep the pressure on the police and also make it more likely that the bad guys will be turned in.
