Support for Nikki Burger and Family

On Friday, Dec. 16th, my mom Nikki Burger took off early in the morning to head out for work like any other day. Little did anyone expect that something so terrible was going to happen that day. Around 4:30 that afternoon my mom was headed back towards home in her Fed-Ex truck and ended up in a horrendous car accident.

It is unclear as to how the accident came to be since my mom is highly sedated and isn't able to explain it to us, but we do know that her truck had flipped multiple times and that it soon caught fire just as she hit a concrete ditch.... Luckily, there was a car close behind my mom and they were able to pull her out of the burning vehicle fairly quick to where she ended up with no burns.  EMTs arrived and rushed her to the hospital in Alpine and shortly after she was flown by helicopter to University Medical Center in Lubbock. The doctors evaluated her very carefully and found that she has a broken neck, collar bone, many broken ribs on both sides, a fractured elbow, a broken ankle, and a fractured hip.

She is having a really hard time breathing due to her bruised lungs, smoke inhalation, and her broken ribs. Being the strong person that my mom is, she pulled through and had the breathing tube removed and is mostly breathing on her own now. She has already has surgery on her hip, and has also had surgery on her ankle to put pins in it so it can heal straight. Both of her surgeries went better than expected.

She has around the clock care from the amazing nurses and doctors to ensure she is getting everything she needs. She is heavily sedated and only opens her eyes for a few seconds every now and then, but hopefully by Christmas, our family will be able to hear her heart-warming voice.

Due to this terrible accident, our family is going to need help. Traveling  4 hours to Lubbock as often as we are able and bills at home are going to be tough on our family. She is going to be in Lubbock in the hospital for atleast a few months healing, and will need physical therapy afterwards. Our family is going to need to make our home handicap accessible as she is more than likely going to be in a wheelchair for a while when she can finally come home. There is also a big possibility that she will need home hospice to care for her as the rest of the family won't be able to care for her constantly due to work.

This is going to be a long journey, but with my mom being as strong as she is, I know she'll make it out just fine. We are just trying to make sure she both has a home to come to after she recovers enough to go home, and also not be buried in debt from hospital bills and other expenses.

Thank you to everyone who is able to help. Even if you can't help monetarily just spreading the word of our situation is a huge help.
