Support for Mikayla & Family

After a long few months, Mikayla is finally done with her treatment and is cancer free! Her family is now back together in Florida, and ready to enjoy playing in the sunshine. The DeCicco family is so thankful and appreciative for outpouring of love and support during this period - thank you all!

We are raising funds for Mikayla DeCicco, a beautiful and lively two year old whose life has been changed forever. It started in February 2018, when it was discovered that Mikayla had a sizable brain tumor, that needed to be removed immediately. She was rushed into surgery at the Cohen's Children's Hospital in Queens, NY. After the intensive surgery, within weeks, her sister Gracie was born, and the family moved from New York to Miami due to a previously planned job relocation. Medical recovery was going well until last month, when an MRI detected another brain tumor. Once again, rushing into surgery, this time in Miami, FL, the surgery went well – however, the biopsy revealed that Mikayla had developed Choroid plexus carcinoma, an extremely rare form of child brain cancer.

Devastated by the news, news that no one ever wants to hear, Michael and Mary (Mikayla’s parents) had to act quickly as to the best way to get Mikayla into treatment. They decided that chemotherapy would be administered at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in Manhattan, NY because of the quality of care, and surrounding family support in the New York area. Her testing & treatment will begin this week. During Mikayla’s treatment, Michael will continue working in Miami, and will fly up continuously to spend quality time with his family.

It is uncertain how long this will take so that we can bring Mikayla home with her family and cat Stuart. Any and all funds raised will be used to help aid this process, reconnect this family who will be separated during this difficult time, and for extensive ongoing medical care.

Any donation would be helpful and greatly appreciated. We are asking for your prayers, support, and your guidance through this journey with Mikayla and her family.

Thank you very much.

About Choroid Plexus Carcinoma:
Choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) begin in the brain within areas called ventricles that are filled with cerebrospinal fluid. As CPTs grow, they block the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. This can increase pressure on the brain and cause the skull to get bigger. Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC), the cancerous form, grows faster and are much more likely to spread through the cerebrospinal fluid and invade nearby tissue. Overall, choroid plexus tumors are rare and represent only about 3% of brain tumors in children, a rare form of child cancer. Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPC) account for 10% to 20% of childhood choroid plexus tumors.
