Joey and Nikki Hyatt are dear friends of mine (Todd Smith).  They are newly weds as of a few months ago and, like most young couples, are starting new jobs and trying to make ends meet.  Yesterday, Tuesday March 28th, Joey was involved in a terrible accident at Miracle Hill in Traveler's Rest, where he works as a donation attendant.  At 9am, Joey went out to begin his day by starting the fork lift truck. When he turned the ignition on there was a deafening explosion that rocked the surrounding buildings.  Joey was in an enclosed, small metal building, and the blast lit him on fire and burned 40% of his body with 2nd and 3rd degree burns.  Other employees assisted him and put out the blaze, but not until Joey was badly burned.  Joey was air lifted to JMS Augusta Burn Center where he remains in critical condition.
My hope is that people could reach out with prayers and financial support for Joey and Nikki Hyatt.  He is expected to remain at the JMS Burn Center for at least 6 weeks where he will go through extensive skin grafts.  This procedure is long and painful. Since both Nikki and Joey's family will have to be at the burn center in Augusta for the foreseeable future, we want to help them with any outstanding costs that might arise due to this situation. In turn, we ask for any financial support you might be able to give at the moment. You can donate to this page.
Thank You in advance for your prayers and any donations.

We're about 10 days into this process with Joey; here are a few updates.

Joey's burnt on about 40% of his body and has 2nd and 3rd degree burns. The most damaged areas are his right arm and his chest. These are deep third degree burns and will take the longest to recover from. He's already had some grafting done to his face; this is the first procedure of many more to come.

He's also been having difficulty with his lungs. This morning (4/7/17), they had to drain about a pint of fluid from them. This is emblematic of the way this process will go: even after a great day, it's entirely possible for a big setback to come out of nowhere. The added stress that this puts on Joey's family is hard to describe. Even seeing improvement is difficult because it makes you long all the more for him to be back to normal.

All of the support that we've received so far means so much. It's a wonderful indicator of the impact that Joey has had on those around him and a hugely needed blessing in a time of pain. Please continue to share both Joey's story and the impact that he has had on you so that he and his wife will be able to recover together as quickly and as safely as possible.

Prayers for this family. 6 weeks would be a minimum stay :( He may get workers compensation but his wife and family won't. They will need all the help they can get to make their stay with him as least stressful as possible. If you do set up a bank account please share the info so we can donate to that and they can keep all of the money raised.

Can you set up another way to donate since the gofundme keeps 7.9%. Maybe a bank would work out something with no charge. It would be nice for them to keep all the money donated...look into that

Cost for family to stay will not be covered by any insurance. I pray that all the medical expenses will be paid and that the family will not have to worry about anything while they are with him. God provides for all! My prayers are with you all during this time.

If he was working, he should be covered by workers compensation insurance. Work comp will pay his medical and lost wages.

I do hope they pursue the Worker's Compensation situation. That will definitely cover his medical bills and disability if there is any later.
