Portuguez Family Landslide Fund

$3,545 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 50 people in 6 months
Observatory Hill, Inc. is a non-profit community based organization which is committed to neighborhood improvements.

Our neighbor and Observatory Hill resident, Cessy Portuguez and her son, were forced to leave their home of nine years due to a landslide. The ground has shifted and the basement of her Semicir Street home has been destroyed.  They were only able to retrieve a few items before being told to evacuate.    The Red Cross paid for a week's hotel stay and we are working to find afforable housing.

The family has homeowner's insurance but it does not cover landslides so they will not be able to file a claim.

Funds will be given to help pay for a deposit and rent on an apartment while they await the results of the geotesing which can take up to 12 weeks.

Please help us to spread the word.  This post is on our facebook page:  Observatory Hill, Inc and on twitter: @ohipgh

We thank you for your support.

Took updated photos today to share with everyone. Getting harder to climb the hill to take them as the ground has dropped significantly.

We hope you will join us on Saturday, April 21, for the spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Because Oxford Solutions generously provided all the supplies needed to sponsor this dinner, all proceeds will be given to this family.

We are also glad to report that the family has found an apartment and used their first payment of their funds to pay the deposit and the first month's rent. I have been asked to pass on the family's appreciation to everyone for their kindness in this time of emergency.

Click this link for the details on our dinner and we hope you can join us.

Met with Cessy and Jean Paul today. Took some updated photos which show the hillside is continuing to drop. Our attorney on our OHI board has offered his services and was able to meet with her this past week.

Met with Cessy and Jean Paul. Gave her a microwave and clothes donations and are working to find her housing. The Red Cross provided a week stay at a hotel and she will stay with a friend for now. Much more damage to her home this week.

Spoke with Building Inspection and was told the city will do Geotesting on the house to determine where things stand. They will then make recommendations to the homeowner who will have to pay for repairs or for demolition. They will also assess the whole area and street around the house to determine what needs to be done to make sure the whole street is safe. Unfortunately, the results will not be available for 10 to 12 weeks. Next step is to see if the home insurance will cover the replacement of any belongings inside and to look for long term housing solutions.
