On August 7 my sister, Brandy Van Dyke, was involved in an automobile accident while on a road trip from Seattle to Reno. She was a passenger in the backseat when the accident occurred with another car and two deer crossing the road. Brandy was airlifted to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, OR for immediate treatment.
Her injuries include a broken back, spinal damage (she has lost feeling in her left leg) two broken ribs on each side and a minor lung puncture. Over the weekend she had two surgeries - inserting two plates and pins for the spine and extensive repair work to her back, spinal cord and bone. The doctors have told the family these procedures went very well.
She is currently resting and working on healing at St. Charles. They will not release her to leave until she can complete 3 hours of physical therapy. At the moment she can not sit up or move from the waist down. We do not know the long-term outcome and medical prognosis at this time - however the family is under emotional trauma and facing financial essentials that include immediate needs for the family to visit and take care of Brandy out-of-state. She will also need to move into an accommodating living situation for her limited mobility once she is sent home from inpatient care.
Brandy was on her way to Hot August Nights, the famous car gathering in Reno, NV that she has made a yearly pilgrimage for the past few years with friends. She has always loved cars and automotive events.
I love my sister and we all are trying to do what we can to support her right now. Prayers are needed and greatly appreciated. She has two wonderful boys, Shaun and Jay, who will also need the love and support of friends and family during this time.
