Support a Librarian during the Government Shutdown

On January 1st, I listed four antique books from my collection for sale through a Facebook album. I am a librarian who works on a student services contract with the Environmental Protection Agency.  If I don't work, I don't get paid nor may I make up lost time or receive back-pay.  I knew I had to do something at that time to help mitigate the loss. We didn't know how long this shutdown would persist.

On January 2nd, my true love proposed! We are committed to each other 100%, through thick and thin. Even though I am thrilled about the engagement, with the economic uncertainty, I haven't started planning the wedding. I should be giddy and excited. We began the house buying process in December. Now we've put that on hold indefinitely. Banks don't like seeing a zero for income during a whole month!

I agreed to the national media interviews after my Government Shutdown Yard Sale was discovered. I wanted to put a face on the cost for the shutdown. We all have to make tough decisions. I put the initial goal at $1500 because my rent due at February 1st is $1200.  I appreciate any help you wish to give. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/01/10/now-craigslist-facebook-household-items-furloughed-workers-trying-make-ends-meet/?utm_term=.d15dcd0f30e9

Not to the finish line yet!

As a student services contractor, I must wait until the EPA contracts office opens tomorrow and gives the clearance for us to start working again. I suppose it will be Tuesday, at the earliest, when I can get back to my desk again.

We contractors will also not be paid until we have worked two weeks because our pay periods have effectively started over. For the contractors, this is like a 50 day shutdown rather than a 35 day shutdown! I am so grateful for the support I received this month because that means I won't been hurting financially during that lag time.

What will happen in the meantime, politically? We have no idea! My coworkers and I view it as an awful limbo situation until a permanent budget is passed and signed. This national drama isn't over until then.

We were able to set our wedding date for September this year! This was a major boost for our morale and gives us a goal. Come what may, we will face it together!

I spoke with another news organization this morning regarding the shutdown from my perspective. The most helpful point I made for the reporter was in reagrd to the fundraising efforts for furloughed employees.

One reason I opened the GoFundMe page was to accept donations was recognizing the need other people have to feel enfranchised in a politically powerless situation. We were stripped of earning our income through working for the good of the American people. The people want to keep that contract with our representative government, even when the elected representation has failed them. The government IS the people!

Fundamentally, most citizens believe we should not let each other suffer from circumstances beyond our control. The generosity shown to me and to the many others in need has reaffirmed my commitment to do the most good I can with what I have been given in life.
