Superman Sam Smith Memorial Fund

The Smith family is a family that loves loudly and prays passionately. After a six-year battle with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer), Superman Sam Smith passed away early Easter morning (4/16/17) to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Sam is now reunited with his father, Tony, who passed away suddenly eight months earlier from a heart attack last August. Sam took his last breath while being comforted in the loving arms of his mom, Amy. He had just turned 19. He is survived by his mother, Amy; his older brothers, Henry and Oliver; and his younger sister, Stella.

Sam has inspired hundreds of people of all ages by his perseverance, courage, and inexplicable joy in the midst of unfathomable suffering. He was a fun-loving, fiery red-head who was always out in the neighborhood kicking a ball, swimming, or shooting hoops. However, at the young age of 13 he encountered a football injury to his leg and was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer. From that point forward, Sam became a fearless fighter of unmatched optimism. Despite more than 50 doses of chemotherapy, the removal of his left leg bone, and the removal of his right lung, Sam's love for Christ and positive outlook only grew. He touched all who heard his story and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Sam graduated from Lee's Summit West High School and was set to attend Missouri State University in the fall of 2017 to pursue a degree in Sports Management and Law.

Appreciated gifts will help contribute to the extensive medical bills for Sam's cancer treatment, the family's time off of work, and funeral expenses. The Smith family is so grateful for your thoughts, prayers, and generous support as they celebrate Sam's life and grieve his passing.

Below is part of a Facebook message that Sam posted two weeks before he passed.

"I want to take this time to thank every single one of you for fighting this journey with me. When I was at my weakest moments, your thoughts and prayers were felt. You have all fought with me over the past 6+ years of this fight and were a huge support system after my dad passed this past August. Your support gave my family and myself strength when we thought we had nothing left. Your prayers got me through 6 surgeries and countless rounds of chemotherapy. During my lowest points, you made sure I was never alone. Please know you will have a special place in my family and I’s hearts forever.

"I will never give up my fight nor will I ever lose hope that we will meet again, and I urge you to always find the bright light in your life. No matter how much darkness surrounds you, there is always a light somewhere to hold on to and to give you strength. Hug the ones in your life who have fought a similar fight or who may be experiencing struggles of their own. As long as there is faith, hope and people like you who show support, cancer can never win.

Your fighter,
Superman Sam Smith"
