As most Torontonians have heard, Somali trans-woman Sumaya Dalmar died suddenly in the early morning on Sunday February 22, 2015 at the young age of 26.

Allahu Naxariisto - may God have mercy on her soul.

Both the Somali and LGBT community are absolutely devastated by this tremendous loss. And yet, we are reminded by all the memories being shared by friends, family and community members that her spirit will stay with us forever.

It is in this spirit, that we are rallying together to fundraise in her honour. The money raised will support both the memorial taking place on Tuesday March 3, 2015 and to pay tribute to her legacy by purchasing a Commemorative Tree for installation in a public park.

We have been touched, truly, by the generosity of so many people across the country who have shared our grief during this difficult time, We hope you can join us in making a donation -- every dollar counts.

In Love, Rage and Solidarity.
#SumayaYSL

P.S -- We will be accepting cash donations at the memorial. We will also be setting up an account that accepts donations via paypall.

Hello friends!

With your incredible support, we are so proud to announce the establishment of the Sumaya Dalmar Award - an annual $1,000 scholarship at Ryerson University in our sister's name. The first award will be available in the Fall of 2018.

The Sumaya Dalmar Award will ensure that Sumaya's life continues to inspire, educate and provide support to trans students of colour for years to come.

In the early days of Sumaya's death, there was an avalanche of grief and rage at the sudden loss of our friend and sister. Through this all, a community of friends and strangers came together and worked diligently and with such great determination to organize and fund her memorial and scholarship. We want to offer our boundless gratitude to each and every one of you for your generosity. This award represents Sumaya's legacy in supporting and loving trans people of colour! It is also a reminder of the power of community-oriented philanthropy.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

Amazing! We've reached over $5,000! This money will go so far in helping us cover the memorial costs and create a legacy in Sumaya's name.

We're hoping an additional $5,000 will allow us to start a scholarship in Sumaya's name at a local university that supports Black trans students. We all know the various challenges trans students encounter in the university -- we hope to remove some of these barriers with this scholarship.

We are filled with so much gratitude during this challenging and confusing time. Thank you to everyone who has donated and shared this with their networks.

In Love, Rage and Solidarity.

Wow! In just one day, we've raised over $3,000. We are so humbled and heartened by how so many people have rallied in honour of our friend and sister Sumaya -- a true testament to the love and light she has shared with the world!

As we've been thinking about how we would like to honour Sumaya, we remembered how she wanted to go back to school. In this vein, we are going to take any additional funds we raise to set up an educational scholarship in her name that is awarded to a Black trans person at a local university.

Again, thank you so much for your support during this extraordinarily challenging time.

In Love, Rage and Solidarity.
