The idea of bringing emerging artists together to share in community and affordable studio space was just the seed, now Studio 400 needs your support to grow.

As Public Functionary expands its programming and space, Studio 400 becomes the place to nourish the root of our purpose: centering the creative practices of artists who need a culture of support not provided by mainstream and institutional art systems. And more importantly, making space for them to forge their own paths.

Studio 400 is not a residency program, it is a platform through which artists invest in their own ability to realize an economically viable creative practice and workspace. Within this space, the artists have the autonomy to build community, dedicate to practice and collaborate with each other. The space is curated and managed by the artists.

Studio 400 is multi-disciplinary, with an open interpretation of art and artists. The program includes painters, graphic designers, fashion designers and more. Artists who are self-taught and artists who are traditionally educated are equally valued. A safe and supportive culture for the development of new ideas, aesthetics and artistic approaches is important in this intersectional space. Studio 400 prioritizes space for artists of color and historically underserved artists, with a focus on young emerging artists under the age of 30.

Leslie Barlow and Public Functionary have a big vision for Studio 400 and we need your help to make it real. We have a two-phase plan for Studio 400. With your support to this campaign we will be able to accomplish the following Phase 1 goals:

-Build the infrastructure for this program so the studio is stable and secured for the next two years.
-Continue to improve the workspaces and gallery space.
-Ensure the artists of this inaugural cohort get the support that they need to stay and thrive, this includes mentorship, skill-building and workshops.
-Afford the time to be intentional about building this community asset for the long term through strategic planning and resource cultivation.

We are confident that through the success of Phase 1, we will be able to move to Phase 2 which includes:

-A paid Studio 400 Program Director
-A paid Studio Manager
-Expanded space (more studios, more artists!!)
-Development of revenue streams and financial growth opportunities for the artists.

Studio 400 has been built on labor, funds and time contributed by Public Functionary (Tricia Heuring, Mike Bishop, Sarah Knutson) and Leslie Barlow. Additionally, we have secured funding/support from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (grant for artist workshops) NEMAA (promotional support) Blick Art Materials (in-kind art supplies), Northrup King Building (space partnership), Artspace (grant funding for build-out and graphic design)  Eric Hedberg (carpentry and build-out) and Ryan Stopera (documentation).

Through collaboration, community and imagination, Studio 400 has come to fruition. Join our network of community members collectively building and lifting up the impact of this platform. Create the space that is the change.
