When the arts go, where do the arts kids go?

Breckinridge Elementary is not just a school, but a home to our students. Our teachers are not just faculty members, but are family members to our community.

We are lucky to live in a city that still values the arts however, our county has not been immune to arts cuts that we've all seen nationwide. I am very proud of the arts program that I have helped build at our school. Not just because of what we have taught our students, but because of the pride our students take in their arts performances. We have an incredible amount of students who are passionate and talented in all areas of the arts. My goal is to extend and nourish this passion outside of the normal school day.

Breckinridge Elementary is a very diverse school; serving students from many different countries with a large immigrant and refugee population. Over 80% of our students quality for free/reduced lunch. Arts experiences outside of school for my students can be too costly, or too difficult to access due to transportation issues.

In collaboration with the Woodhill Community Center, I would like to provide these talented students an opportunity during the summer to get a once in a lifetime experience through an Arts Enrichment Camp. We will provide students with instruction from professionals in Visual Art, Music, Theater, Poetry, and Dance. Students would choose the area they are most passionate about. All classes would work on a project to showcase at the culmination of the camp week for friends and family of the community.

Targeting these students, and showing them that their interest in the arts is important to us, could have long lasting positive effects on their education in all areas.

Bayou Soul singer Marc Broussard graciously allowed us to use his song “Please, Please, Please” at our graduation and has partnered with us to promote this very worthy cause. To learn more about Marc visit http://www.marcbroussard.com/

Please, Please, Please

I, I believe in peace and love and faith and honesty
That you can hold, you can dream
Don't get down when you're swimming up a stream
But the road can be long
When you need me most, know that I'll be strong

Please, please, please remember
To dream dreams bigger than you are
When you leave we'll still be together
I will always keep you in my heart

In time you will fly
Still my love for you will never die
When all, all I know
That it's never easy when you're letting go

The road can be long
When you need me most, know that I'll be strong

Please, please, please remember
To dream dreams bigger than you are
When you leave we'll still be together
I will always keep you in my heart

I, I believe
In peace and love, faith and honesty

Please, please, please remember
To dream dreams bigger than you are
When you leave we'll still be together
I will always keep you in my heart

Please, please, please remember
I will always keep you in my heart
