Help St. Mary’s Church in Harlem

Donation protected
Since 1823, St. Mary’s Manhattanville  has been the “I am not afraid” church, standing up as a community of faith in West Harlem to pursue justice and peace for the poor and oppressed, to pray and care for the sick, lonely and at risk and to put into practice the message of the Gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit.  In addition to worship services, we host a food pantry, a soup kitchen, a health clinic, and a homeless shelter.  All of these efforts are greatly needed in the community we serve.

St. Mary's financial stability was previously provided by the donations of our members and the revenue from tenants using our shared spaces.  However, being an old facility, the church had to undergo an extensive gut rehab of its shared spaces which has depleted a greater portion of our resources than was initially anticipated.  As a result,  we are facing a large deficit in 2018.  The barebones operating budget cannot be raised by our current revenue of pledges and donations.  Once we finalize the renovation, we can maximize our space sharing with other mission-minded organizations again, which will return us to financial stability. Your generosity will help us finalize the renovations and sustain our operating budget until we can again get tenants into the space.  Without this financial support, we would have to pull back on our critical programs starting this summer.

We are also asking you to reach out to those you know, people of all faiths and walks, who might appreciate St. Mary's work for peace, justice and recovery. Tell others about "the little church that could," providing space and connections for people who are hungry and homeless, people recently incarcerated, people with addictions and other medical and psychiatric challenges, people who are stressed out and overwhelmed by the corruption and violence of our society.   We hope to be able to sustain our mission "to pursue justice and peace for the poor and the oppressed, pray for the sick, lonely and at risk, and practice the message of the Gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit: "Do not be afraid."

We are a community of gratitude for every single life, and particularly for the human beings that come through our doors seeking shelter, food, meaning, healing, life and love. We are even more grateful that you help us to give shelter, food, meaning, healing, life and love here.
