On September 6th Hurricane Irma tore through the US Virgin Islands as a Category 5 storm, wreaking havoc on the tiny island of St. John, leaving it in a state of unimaginable destruction and rubble. There will be no power for months, little to no running water, very limited communication with the outside world, and many have been stranded with their houses completely destroyed.

Charleston native, Clint Gaskins, who owns the restaurant The Longboard (in St John), flew down the day before Irma hit to check on his staff, and prepare his restaurant for the impending storm. "It looks like a hydrogen bomb went off here, every single tree on the island is knocked down," says Clint. "We need to get food to the people, the situation is getting dire."

As one of the few establishments on the island that is still standing, and in functioning condition with a generator, he has opened his doors to the community, serving over 2,000 locals and first responders a hot meal.

But, supplies are low and will continue to dwindle, as they have no incoming shipments of products from their sister-islands who were also ravaged by Irma. Private boats are coming daily from Puerto Rice, where we can purchase dry goods and other staples to be able to cook for our community. We are asking for your donations to help us continue to be able to feed and care for our islanders during this devastating time.

It will undoubtedly be a very long road to seeing the island of St. John as we once knew it, but there is unity in community, and with your donation we can help rebuild this once beautiful island and continue to take care of our island family.

GoFundMe is the quickest and easiest way to provide disaster relief by raising money online for victims of emergencies and natural disasters. 100% of your donation will be used immediately to help The Longboard on St. John continue to provide meals for it’s community.

Please share this on every platform you have, and help us get the word out! Thank you for supporting us, and our island community!

There is no way that a 'Thank You' to all of you who have donated to our campaign is ever going to be enough to express just how thankful we are. We are forever grateful for the love and support (and monetary donations) you have provided to us at The Longboard to assist us in feeding those in our St. John community over the past 7 weeks since Irma and Maria paid us a visit.

Your donations (and some help from the Red Cross) have allowed us to serve over 33,000 lunch & dinner meals to our community from September 8th - October 17th, all at no cost to those on island!

As of October 17th, our generator (which was our main and only source of power as the island is still without electricity) decided it had enough and has stopped working. We will be taking a break from our services, and feel confident the island is in a much better and more stable place. Grocery stores are open, and restaurants are starting to open their doors again for 'normal' business. We'll be shutting down to assess the damages we did have to our space and make necessary repairs, as well as allow our staff, who has been working non-stop, to assess their own lives and go visit their families.

After we have paid all of our food vendors and assessed all costs involved with the meal program the last 7 weeks, we will be re-donating any remaining portion of your donations to us back to the St. John community. We are currently talking with the St. John Community Foundation and the Animal Care Center of St. John to get a grasp on their needs, and will be contributing funds to specific projects they are working on to get St. John back on its feet.

Wow! Let's see if we can keep this going! Clint and the Longboard team have served 13,500 meals in two weeks and need every bit of assistance. We haven't receive any funding assistance from them yet, and aren't sure when we will. We are finally able to get shipments of food delivered from St. Thomas, and that the supply chain is greatly improving, although we still have a long way to go.

Hey everyone! We reached the goal of $35k to help feed St. John after Hurricane Irma smashed into the island, now Hurricane Maria is a category 5 and headed for a direct hit. I want to thank you all for helping and sharing and sending positive energy their way.

FROM Clint Gaskins:

"My prediction is Irma and Maria will bankrupt the USVI government and drive us to statehood. Time will tell.
Regardless of the above, the trees will get green, the water is going to return to its clear turquoise beauty and the tourists will continue to find that itch that brings them back.
Resources for tourism will be limited, but we will be open for business as an island sooner than most think.
It's low tide folks, time to set your new anchors and ride the tide back up.
Stay strong and stay positive."

Let's see if we can raise some more money, it's going to be a long time until anyone is back on their feet.
