HISTORIC TRAIN STATION IN CRISIS!

The Friends of the Stewartstown Railroad, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Stewartstown Railroad, has launched an emergency fundraising effort to stabilize the slate roof on the Stewartstown Train Station. Built in 1914, the original slate roof over the second story, as well as the freight house, are crumbling and no longer water-tight.  A series of spring storms with strong winds and golf ball-sized hail has damaged several pieces of slate. Over time, water has also leaked inside the station and damaged the plaster and lath walls and ceiling. Volunteers have made temporary repairs to stabilize the roof and upstairs interior rooms. Lower sections of the roof were in such bad shape just a few years ago the slate was removed and replaced with asphalt shingles.

The Friends of the Stewartstown Railroad are looking to raise $5,000 to help fund a new roof on the station in Stewartstown. A metal roof will be installed in place of the slate, based upon cost and availability. Once this new roof is installed, our volunteers will be hard at work repairing the lath and plaster walls and ceilings that have been severely damaged.

We need your help to preserve this historic time machine. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to this cause!
