Hello!!

What we would like to build:
1 school block containing 3 classrooms and 2 store rooms.
Toilet block
Staff room
Kitchen
Sports ground
Playground
School garden - nutrition feeding programme

In the northern town of Nkahta Bay, currently there is NO international standard primary school. The local government ran schools in the town have around 100 children to each classroom. Here in the UK the guideline is 30.

These vastly over populated classrooms leave the young learners receiving little-to-no individual attention, meaning those who fall behind in lessons do so at an expadential rate.

When a child falls behind in one of these large classrooms, it is very difficult for them to receive the attention and tuition they need to get back on track. This leaves the child less engaged resulting in only 50.9% of children completing all grades of primary school (UNICEF data).

On the other hand, a child in a smaller classroom can be monitored more closely, receives more individual attention and therefor more engaged in lessons.

Butterfly already run a primary classroom and two nursery schools. Results have shown that children who go through Butterfly nursery schools often can skip the first grade of primary school because of how far ahead they are with the education they have received from Butterfly. This means our children are far more engaged in lessons and far more likely to stay until the entirety of primary school, clearly a huge boost on life chances.

With Butterfly’s current primary classroom and two nursery schools, the children need somewhere to graduate to continue the development of their education. As well as these students, the school will seek advice from the Local Authority for student selection. The school will be a 50-50 split of fee paying and free scholarships.

Our vision is to initially build one block containing three classrooms and two store rooms, with the additional living space for teachers and long-term volunteers. Furthermore, the school also have a kitchen, giving students the option of hot meals. As started in the full proposal document- which can be viewed on our website- there is potential for butterfly’s current 'fighting against aid with nutrition' (FAAWN) group to run the kitchen. Plans also include setting up a school garden and nutritional feeding program, allowing students and the wider community to learn the importance of nutritional values – whilst providing food for the school kitchen.

Two pitches will also be created for the countries two national sports, football and volleyball, giving students the chance to exercise and build teamwork skills outside the classroom. In the long run we wish to expand to eight classrooms.

Butterfly space was created eight years ago by Alice Leaper from Thornbury (S Glous). The charity has developed great relationships within the local community and this new projects is heavily supported. Butterfly has a full board of directors in England and can provide transparent accounts for the entirety of its running.

At butterfly space there is a constant supply of passionate and keen volunteers willing to work on the projects. We aim to place a long-term with each local teacher to provide classroom support and be part of the teachers on going training.

The build is set to start this summer, if fundrasing goes to plan, with a view to open in September.

How I am involved:

I first went to Malawi in the summer of 2014 with 15 other students from Marlwood school. My love for Malawi was born, so much so that the following February, a mear 7 months later I was back on a flight to volunteer for another month in the 'warm heart of Africa'. It was during this time 'Stepping Stones' was introduced to me. Instantly keen, I was set on helping this school become a reality for the children who are going to be the future of the country.
