Step Up For Keisha

You know that helpless feeling you get when you hear that someone you love is in dire need and battling an awful disease?

“What can I do? How can I help? What do I say?”

We’ve got the answers to those questions, but first, let us introduce ourselves: we are Keisha’s wives. As we’ve come to find out in the last few days, Keisha has many. Many more than any of us knew. Hell, she’d make the Mormon church damn proud if she weren’t a gay black woman who cussed all the time.

We are Keisha’s work wives (so many of those!), Keisha’s old school wife, Keisha’s dog walking wife, Keisha’s bitch-about-the-Cowboys wife, Keisha’s chemo buddy wife, Keisha’s medical advocate wife, Keisha’s hiking wife etc… As it turns out, Keisha’s got a wife for every occasion, and we’re all finally in the same room together.

So we wives finally met, and -- as women do -- we got to talking. Not surprisingly, we all agreed that Keisha is one helluva stubborn woman. She loathes asking for help; as she’s already asked a couple of times, she wouldn’t ask again.

That’s where we come in. We got access to this account, and -- as her inner circle -- we’re asking.

Keisha needs help right now. Her condition has taken a devastating turn and on top of fighting her cancer, she’s fighting sepsis. She’s had a chronic bacterial infection that her doctors determined was originating from her port. Keisha’s doctors removed the port on Wednesday and now begins the fight to rid her body of the infection.

This infection has inflicted excruciating pain in the last few weeks. That pain, coupled with the effects of the tumors, is more than any of us could imagine, and Keisha needs the love and support of her friends and family right now more than ever.

We have spent the last few days in the hospital watching this warrior battle her way through unimaginable pain and suffering, all the while never losing that patented Keisha spirit. Yesterday, she argued, and ultimately won an argument, with a mansplaining nurse who refused to listen to her instructions...and she did this with one arm via a dry erase tablet.

So what can you do and how can you help?

1. Donate. Donate whatever you can. If it’s tight, give $20. If you can give more, please do. All funds raised will go toward keeping Keisha comfortable during this critical juncture and care for her beloved dogs.

2. Visit. We created a Google Doc  that makes it easy for you. There’s no need to ask if it’s a good time or what to bring. It’s all there in the doc . Keisha loves receiving messages, but she’s not able to respond to questions about logistics.

3. If you cannot visit in person, text or email and let her know how much you love her. This cancer has taken Keisha's ability to speak.

Please don’t mistake the lighthearted tone of this update; now is the time to visit and/or show your love and support in whatever way you can. Do not put off what you can do today.
