Stefanie and Brooke Schaffer were traveling on vacation with their mother and stepfather, Stacey and Paul Bender. On Saturday June 30th the family joined a boat tour to enjoy the sights off the island of Exuma, located about 130 miles south of Nassau. The boat bursts into flames shortly after 9 a.m.

Stefanie sustained life threatening injuries including a double amputation and remains in critical condition. Stacey suffered multiples broken bones and internal injuries. Paul and Brooke suffered bruises and cuts.

Brooke and Stefanie’s father and Brother are traveling to be with them in the Bahamas, George and George Jr.

We are raising funds for the medical and travel expenses.  With the support of the family, we have launched a GoFundMe page, in hopes to raise $50,000.00. We know their expenses will far exceed this as this becomes a life long struggle for this family.

Little by little Stefanie improves each day. She is still receiving dialysis at Spaulding Cambridge and works with physical therapist and occupational therapists daily. She continues to work with orthopedic, plastic surgeons and hand specialists at Mass General. Many days Stef is exhausted by all her hard work. She is a fighter!

She has a ways to go before prosthetics , but has met a wonderful peer group from the Boston Marathon Victims who have provided helpful information, emotional support and even made homemade meals and brought to the hospital.

Once again, Stefanie and her family are so grateful for all the love and support they receive. Thank you and please continue to pray for Stefanie and her family.

Thank you again for your support. Stefanie and Stacey continue to recover. They have made it to New England and both are working on PT for their healing bones. Stefanie still faces many challenges and is working very hard to overcome her challenges. She still has a lot of healing to do before she will be ready to address her amputation challenges. Stefanie has had great support from friends and family. Thank you to those special people! Stefanie has also had an opportunity to meet other people who are challenged by amputations. These are great inspirations. Again, thought and prayers and comments on this forum are so encouraging for Stef, Stacey and the family. Keep them coming.
