Stand Up for Gili & Lombok
On August 5th, the Gili islands and Lombok were hit by a devastating earthquake of 6.9 on the Richter scale, followed by countless aftershocks.
I visited Gili Trawangan on October 18th and found a lot of volunteers from around the world, Gili and even Lombok working together toward a common goal, rebuild the island. I was amazed at the efforts people have put in. Tourism is the key not only for Gili, but also Lombok reconstruction. I am fundraising because I believe in the work these people are doing in the island to support those in Lombok without homes or access to food, water, medical supplies and adequate shelter.
My friend @marina.thrasmussen who's been living in Gili Trawangan for a couple of years now and was there when the earthquake happened is going to help me make sure that the funds I raise go to those in need. The more money I raise the more people we can help.
One house cost 20.000.000 IDR (around 1859.50 AUD) to build. Wood is super expensive at the moment, because houses out of wood are more stable and have better chances to survive an earthquake. My plan is to raise enough money to at least build one house in the village called Cupek, North of Lombok, where sadly most of the people still lives in tents.
I started a 30 days stand up paddle board challenge to support those who lost everything on the earthquakes in Gili and Lombok. I will be going for a paddle as often as the conditions allow me until December 22nd when I go back to Gili Trawangan to spend Christmas and New Year. I encourage anyone who wants to join me on the paddle to message me, even if you do not know how to surf or use a SUP, I am happy to share one of my boards with anybody who wants to learn.
