On the night before Thanksgiving, I witnessed a white woman engage in a 30 minute racist rant (complete with yelling and cursing and repeated references to the fact that employees were African American) against the employees at a Chicago Michaels store - because she did not like that they offered her the option to purchase a re-usable shopping bag for her larger items. I was directly in front of this customer in line, I stopped at the exit to show my 2 year old a Christmas ornament and witnessed first-hand that the Michaels’ employees did nothing to provoke this verbal attack, and in fact treated all customers with professionalism and courtesy. I was so shocked by this unprovoked attack that I captured 17 minutes of it on video on my phone. I am starting this gofundme because I’d like to do something to try to make it up to the employee who was the main target of this racist attack. I’d like to show her that many people are horrified by how this woman treated her, and that we stand with her and appreciate her hard work.  She inspired me because despite the hateful words that were being hurled in her direction, she stood in that entranceway calm and unmoving to protect her staff and customers. Her calmness calmed me and I saw a true leader, which in today’s world, is something to be rewarded. All proceeds from this gofundme will be given to this employee, who has three children, to try to make her busy holiday season brighter. In the current climate I believe it’s very important that we go out of our way to treat each other with dignity, kindness and politeness, and that we stand up for each other when we see people being mistreated.

***Thank you so much for everyone's kindness and generosity, I want to reiterate that the police were called, bystanders, including myself, were actively involved and the staff handled this flawlessly. There is so much you don't see in this video. Atleast ten customers stood next to the manager and waited for the police. That is what shocked the manager and myself the most, that people actually spoke up. You had to be there to see how the people were united. Thank you so much for helping me with this small gesture to thank this employee. Over 48,000 people have seen this video, if that many people gifted $1 this could be life-changing. I saw a hero and a leader in this manager. I was inspired by her. This incident started over a $1 re-usuable bag, but it's not new for African Americans and other POC. We have to stand up, if you can't speak up, at least be a witness and share your story.

A letter from Holli:

I'll start with this. I am in utter shock. You have all single handedly changed my life. Each of you have shown me that this world is worth living in. I have felt so misguided in a sense of why can't I get passed where I am. I've tried to be kind, I've tried to be fair, I've tried to share regardless if I was able to. I want others to smile when I smile back at them. Knowing deeply we all have a higher purpose. How can I help!!

For some time now, I've felt this overwhelming sense of failure. I want to make a positive change in this world. I know what I'm here for and that's to help others reach their higher potential. With your support I have been blessed with the opportunity to live and not just survive daily. I can properly provide for my family and meet all our children's needs. I will now have the ability to get my business up and running in order to provide a better future for us. And I can still give back to my community even more now.

You have personally contributed to SO much more than you could possible know.

I ask that you please forgive me as I'm a little afraid to make a public video. Just know that from my soul to yours. You will be blessed for this act of unconditional kindness. I never thought my ginormous dreams would become a reality so soon and at the hand of others, but with your support I can now take the steps needed to build a better future. Because of you this dark world has a lot more light in it.
Not to preach at you or push spirituality at you. That being said I pray that you gain real fulfillment in your life. I don't know you but I love you. It's weird to some people but whatever, I believe we are one people so if I love myself therefore I love you. We've been taught that what we do unto others, we receive in return.

A great teacher of mine has said "All forms of pain, suffering, illness or financial chaos are there to promote spiritual growth and character change." We are the change. You are this change. We stand together side by side in truth and know love trumps hate. Blessings to you may your light continue to break through the darkness.

-Yours sincerely Jony AKA Holli

Thank you all for your messages, I apologize for the confusion. Nothing has changed. I have been trying to carefully word my posts as I don't want people harassing this woman about the money. It is all still going to her and it is all her decision on how she uses it. She has expressed interest in giving part to a charity for the homeless that she supports and to reward some of her co-workers, but again this is entirely her decision however she wants to use it, I have insisted that she use it to meet her needs before anything else. I posted a clarification. So sorry for the confusion, I am just trying my best to take the heat off of her on this as she is a kind generous person who never expected this outpouring of support. I do feel an obligation to all of you who have participated to keep you in the loop. People have been asking so many questions that I felt like an update was needed and gofundme does not allow the option to respond to individual comments. Thank you for reaching out. If you have questions, please go to my public facebook page, it is easier for me to respond there. https://www.facebook.com/JessieGradyWrites/

*(edit to clear up some questions) This is UNBELIEVABLE!! I am going to try to post some updates as soon as time permits, as I am reaching out to the employee on how she would like to direct these funds for her goals, her family, her staff and her community. (I know a lot of people are asking for updates since this has gotten so big and I wanted to let you know that - it is her decision - that has not changed - but this is bigger than we ever imagined and I want to show accountability to you on this!). This was initially started as small gesture from the local community to show their support and appreciation and it has turned into something amazing!!! Stay tuned! #LoveNotHate #SpeakUp
