Stand Out Against Bullying In WA
Donation protected
In 2016, news shocked the country when 13 year old boy Tyrone Unsworth died by suicide after years of bullying because of his gay identity. This was just one case in an ongoing battle faced by LGBTQI youth each day. Suicide, depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses are much more prevalent for LGBTQI young people — and so is homelessness for LGBTQI young people who are frequently kicked out of their home for coming out.
At StandOut WA, we believe education and awareness is the best way to counter bullying, which often occurs at a surface level due to a lack of understanding or knowledge. Our team, which consists of youth leaders and students in the community, works to provide an interschool community and support groups for LGBTQI+ students, their teachers and their allies, bringing together non-LGBTQI and LGBTQI youth to further mutual understanding and inclusion.
What do we do
We work with teachers to assist them in understanding and helping their LGBTQI+ students, with cohorts to increase awareness and education of LGBTQI+ rights and issues, making schools a safer environment and with the students themselves to provide a supportive space in which, despite any external difficulties, they know they are safe to discuss sexuality and to express their support.

What we've done
In 2018, we increased our number of participating schools, spoke at Inclusive Education’s teachers’ workshop, attended the ICEA Classic youth festival to distribute resources, and participated in the annual Pride Parade in November. In schools, we also hosted multiple fundraisers and days in recognition of transgender mental health and suicide, encouraged guest speakers to give workshops and addressed concerns on behalf of their students.

Why we need your support
To achieve our goals, we need your generous help. Run by volunteers and sustained by small community donations, we are currently in need of $1000 in order to cover our 2019 operational costs, including printing costs of our creative magazine, resources distributed at conferences and events, and website costs to help provide resources to students in Perth and even Margaret River. With your support we would have the potential to distribute resources and showcase the creative work of youth to 100s of high-school students and teachers in WA.
What we've got on
In the future, we aim to continue increasing our community, with more school groups, and events. Our creative magazine, which showcases the works of both LGBTQI youth and their allies, and contains art, graphics and poetry. The community is ever expanding, and to provide the best possible for them, StandOut will continue working to further the cause.
As an entirely volunteer run organisation, we always value community support. Besides giving generously, we welcome anyone who wants to help out as a volunteer for our zine or community projects and events! If you'd like to get involved with StandOut WA, you can contact us through this page, or on Facebook.com/standoutwa or on instagram @standoutwa.
