We would do anything for our kids, right?
In the fall of 2016, seven year old Ben Millheim fell 13 feet from a loft while on a camping trip, fracturing his skull and causing him to bleed from the ears and have seizures. His parents, Dan and Melissa, got him into town to get a cell signal, but needed an airlift to take his son 100 miles to a hospital in St. Louis. What they didn't know was the air ambulance service was out of network, which would land a $32,000 bill at their doorstep.
Ben miraculously survived and is thriving today. Dan and Melissa are saddled with a large bill for doing one simple thing: what was needed to save their son. The same thing any good parent would do. They have exhausted options with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, the insurance company they used at the time and the ones who will not work with them in getting the bill paid.
Dan said it best, "Obviously, no one plans for a situation like this...but the whole reason for having insurance is to cover this type of stuff."
My wife Rachel and I would do the same thing for our son, Vinny, who will be 7 in September.
