Stand By Bill

On October 31st, 2016 my grandfather (Bill Nelson) was on a ladder cleaning his gutters.  Extremely active and healthy at 84.  Just a few hours later early November 1, 2016 he had a massive stroke.  He was paralyzed on his left side, had a feeding tube to eat (he couldn't swallow) and had speech problems.  For the next 3 months, my grandfather worked so hard.  He got his left leg going again and was working to regain the strength in it.  He got to the point of standing, and with help, taking a step.  He was talking and teasing like a pro (if you know my grandfather at all you know this is what he likes to do best) and started eating pureed food.  The women in rehab called him their miracle case.  They had never seen anyone who had that type of stroke at that age come back so fast.  He was determined.  Four days before my grandfather was due to "finally" go home he started getting stuffy.  The family asked several times for a Dr. to come in to see him but the rehab clinic never made that phone call to have the Dr. come in.  The day before grandpa was due home he was sent to the ER at my grandmother's insistence.  Thank God she did because we all know she saved his life by demanding this.
At the hospital my grandfather went into septic shock, he was in renal failure, heart failure, and his blood pressure was 80/40.  He had pneumonia and the flu.  The hospital did their thing and grandpa got better but had a HUGE set back in his recovery.  He has more hard work ahead to get where he was.  He can not stand, walk, or eat.  He is back on the feeding tube.  There are a lot of things he needs to help with his daily care and it's getting pretty pricy let alone the Dr. bills.  He is offically handicap and my grandparents house had to be turned accessible for him to live.

A little background on my grandfather; to just show what an amazing man he is.  And such a fearlessly strong fighter!

Grandpa (Bill) had 13 years in the Air Force serving our country and would have made it his career choice but  decided he wanted to be around the raise his kids.  He then worked for Traveler's Insurance until he retired.  He changed his dream for another of raising the family he loves, hands on.
My grandparents have been happily married 53 years this year.  They raised 6 children, have 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandkids.  Who he loved to be able to get on the floor and play with.  I know those days are far ahead if at all, and I know it breaks his heart that he cant get down there and play with them.  But all of his "kids" know how dearly he loves them to the core.  My grandparents were lucky enough to have the dream wedding in Maui for their 50th Year Anniversary.  These are the people that always give, they don't have much financially but their hearts are amazing and if you need them they come running.  Now they need US.  They are on a fixed income.  So there is no extra to help with this expense.  Of course they would NEVER ask for help, but thats why I am here, because we as their family will.

If you can and would like to please donate.  Our family appreciates anything at this point.  And funds are needed on a daily basis.

We will be updating this on his recovery so everyone can follow in his success.  Please Stand By Bill!  We love you grandpa!
