The dream is to set up a sustainable community for veterans that today "fall through the cracks" for one reason or another. This is a pilot program that we hope to see spread across the nation and greatly reduce the number of homeless veterans on the streets.
The Samson’s Strength Sustainable Veterans Project, Inc., a 501 (c) 3, (SSSVP, Inc.) will lease a 10-acre parcel of a 115-acre farm in rural Alabama. Veterans who are selected to participate will come together and assist with building individual housing units as a team. This is what provides their housing, and they have to put "sweat equity" in (think Habitat for Humanity).
The Team at SSSVP, Inc. has a passion for supporting our Warriors and the community. Our Team brings a unique understanding of the military population both personally and professionally.
Our SSSVP, Inc. President – Dave Flounders,
brings over 31 years of military experience, 20+ enlisted and 11 officer.
Our Case Manager – Kathleen Saucier,
supports us with over 25 years of Community Mental Health experience, specializing in trauma and Veterans. She also brings extensive background in the nonprofit and governmental agency arena, to include grant writing, program development and startups of both equine and canine therapy assisted programs.
Together the Team strives to engage recently returning or discharged Warriors with reintegration back into the community starting in a small village and tiny home setting. The strong case management plan is designed to provide structure in a real world setting, to include connecting them with services and resources within the community and providing a day-to-day healthy living plan for future continued success. Utilizing the Samson's Strength Farm and the Veteran Ventures, LLC in conjunction with SSSVP, Inc. to actively engage the Warriors, the Team will enhance skill building through hands-on involvement in day to day workings of the sustainable farm, garlic production/marketing sales, as well as the other divisions – leatherworking, sawmill, Disc Jockey and Karaoke Jockey performances, equipment maintenance, property management, animal husbandry, and conservation practices.
SSSVP, Inc. will also strive to set the example by integrating sustainable energy practices, raising the awareness of the veterans and local community leaders. Food will also be a major part of sustainability and we plan to farm traditionally as well as build and maintain hoop houses.
As Veterans transition back to the civilian community our goal is to set them up for success. By the time Veterans are ready to move on, they will have lined a job up, housing arrangements, saved up 6 months of living expenses, and full connection to the Department of Veterans Affairs, both Medical and Benefits. We also expect to collaborate with local resources to conduct classes on site for resume building, financial planning, job training (with hands on experience).
What sets us apart from similar programs? Maybe you are saying I have seen things like this before. The fundamental difference here is that the Veterans themselves will be a major part in the development of this program. This program is set up to be very fluid or "organic" meaning it grows based on the needs we see as we see them developing. Other programs simply use tons of funding to build a place and then plant veterans who sit there and wither. Here they would flourish and grow because everything will be born from THEM as it goes on.
Your donations will be used to fund individual furnished housing units, community buildings as well as the onsite sustainable farm.
Our goal is to be up and running housing Veterans by October 1st, 2018.
