A big thank you to Ben Mathes for starting this campaign when I didn't know what to do with myself.  It has now been transferred to myself, Mikki Zuiches,Joe s wife, soulmate, ski partner and best friend.

Thank you all for showering us with your support through our darkest moments and days. I look forward to sharing with our son Cannon the generous outpouring of light from all of you when our future looked so dark. With all of our love... because of all your love

Mikki Z

Ski Patrol loves fresh snow as much as you. And you owe those few best days in the mountains to patrollers. They go into the worst storms at 5am. They put their life on the line for you and yours.

When the worst happens, we owe.

-Ben Mathes

------------------------------------------------

Joe Zuiches, a 42 year-old resident of Olympic Valley and a member of the Squaw Valley professional ski patrol since 2012, was killed in a fatal incident at 8:35 AM this morning, prior to regularly scheduled operations, during avalanche control activities at the top of Gold Coast Ridge at Squaw Valley.

The team at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is deeply saddened by this tragic event, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends affected. Joe will be survived by his wife and infant son. Make a charitable donation to the Zuiches Family today.

If you are a large individual donor, please contact Jackie Megnin: jmegnin@squaw.com

If anyone is wondering -- A lot of the folks giving major donations aren't going through GoFundMe. GoFundMe is great for organizing the disparate Squaw family. And we are showing how big and strong that family is. Individual, larger donors are working directly with Squaw and the Zuiches family.

This man is a friend, and we last spent Thanksgiving with him and his family/extended family, who we consider part of ours. We're devastated, and deeply appreciate this community's support.

Thank you for doing this. We're a non-resident, Squaw Valley family, and we were shattered when we heard this news. I've read that the ski corp is working with individuals who are able to do so to fund something for the family. But the wonderful thing about gofundme is that it gets financial help to the family quickly in their greatest hour of need.

Money will never bring him back, but it is great to see how the entire community is here to help! Sorry for your loss and all the best for the future ... a tough road ahead but there is a village to carry us all forward!

Thank you so much to the organizers of this fund. Joe was a beloved member of our high school tribe in Pullman, Washington- bright, kind, and funny as hell. He is gone to soon. Our saddened hearts are with our Zuiches clan, and I send love to Mikki and his son, whom I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting, and his Squaw Valley family. May he remain a beacon for us all to continue doing what we love. Peace.

I worked as a Professional Ski Patrolman while attending Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff, AZ. I understand the hard work, low pay, and lack of insurance, while supporting a family. Rest in Peace Joe and I hope this fund is a blessing for your family.

Miranda - Just back from visiting with Joe's brother and sister-in-law. Absolutely all of this that passes through Go Fund Me will be going to Mikki and Cannon, his wife and child. Money can't begin to touch their loss, but it can help two uprooted lives find some footing and have tools to start rebuilding. The generosity here is incredible - thanks everyone so much!
