Hello, my name is Spencer R. Butler Jr. and I am calling on YOUR support to get me to Ghana, West Africa ($2400 by April 1st, other funds by MID MAY!)
I'm a full-time undergraduate student at California State University, Long Beach, Co-Founder of men's support group KING II KING (#kingiiking), student activist/organizer, and peer & youth mentor. I've been given the oppurtunity to study abroad through the ASB Ghana Howard/LB Program this summer and I'm fundraising to get there! Not just as a growing and developing scholar, but also an African-American man, the oppurtunity to take my first flight(s) ever, and also to ---> Washington, D.C. ----> Africa... I'm overwhemingly looking forward to.
Trip preview!: Long Beach State University & Howard University are teaming up for a study abroad in Ghana, focusing on international service learning and cultural immersion. The program creates oppurtunities for global engagment to address issues of poverty, equity and access to education in the U.S. and Ghana. Aside from tours/lectures, we'll be experiencing Ghanain art, craftsmanship, music, literature, drum & dance at the University of Ghana, Legon. Lastly, we're promoting global literacy by raising funds/book donations to build & attain library resources/school supplies for partner schools in Ghana. Upon return, we'll do campus presentations to share impact of trip on our development as leaders and professionals!
Places to visit will include: *Elmina & Cape Coast "Castles", preserved slave dungeons *W.E.B. DuBois Centre for Pan Africanism *Beading villages *Kente/Woodcarving villages *Local youth schools *Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park *Marcus Garvey Center and more!
